NBA Street

Release Date :

   Febuary 19, 2002
Developer :    EA Sports
Publisher :    EA Sports
Rated :    E
Genre :    Sports
Players :    1-2

Plot :

Imagine what games would look like if some of the NBA's best stars called "next" at the local playground. Forget team defense and don't bother looking
for a scoreboard, "NBA Street" is all about style.
This is regular three-on-three street basketball. Shots inside the
three-point line count one point; outside shots are worth two. The
winners must score 21 points plus be up by two. There are no fouls, but there is a shot clock and a system that keeps track of your trick moves. Flying dunks or steals build up your team's gamebreaker meter. Once the meter is full, you get a chance to score one special shot that adds to your score while subtracting points from the other team's.You can put stars like Michael Jordan on your team and select players from an opponent's team once they've been beaten. The hard part is learning all of the complicated buttons and turbo triggers that give your guys their power moves. The game also includes plenty of trash talking and a soundtrack of hip-hop tunes.

Game play :

Super cool trick system, combinations of turbo buttons to do special dribble and dunk moves. The gameplay is exaggerated for sure, but it's still got a sense of realism. It seems like an accurate portrayal of the street ball style of b-ballin, except that you're allowed to goaltend. In street ball games they will always call goal tending, so it was a little strange to see it allowed in this game. But it actually adds a certain flavor to the game style and the way you play defense. You can leave a big man around the hoop to try to block long range shots, but it's not so easy and you can easily get burned if you stay in the paint too much. It turns out to be not such a bad thing after all. All-in-all the gameplay is the highlight of the NBA Street experience, it reminds you of the the fun in NBA Jam, yet it offers more realism and way more depth. Outstanding stuff!!

Graphics :

Very nice looking graphics. The players look good, but some definitely got more attention than others. Some just seem like repeats, but not too many. The levels are really cool; paper/leaves will blow across the court, people will watch and cheer as you play, and cars will pass by in the background. Other levels have reflective puddles, snow, sparks, and many other cool effects. Each level is different, but they're all street courts, you won't find any real stadiums or arenas here.
