Settlers of the Stone Age Info
This is another game based on Settlers of Catan. I debated whether to put this on my Catanworld site since Catan is not in the title, but it is a cool game and deserves its place.
Setup and Resource Strategy
The board position is fixed at the beginning. I will assume that you are an experienced Catan player and use variable camp placement. Camps are basically the equivalent of settlements or colonies. Here are some strategies:
1. Make sure you have a stable income of meat.
2. Hide is the least important resource, but you still need it once and awhile.
3. Make sure you have one camp reasonably close to Europe. I'm not saying to build on the border, but don't put all of your camps at the extreme South and West of Africa.
Opening Strategy
It may seem obvious, but make sure you get a reasonable income of the four resorces before you start getting exploration counters. And do not just grab the closest intersections for your camp sites. You may want to get resources that compliment what you already have, but you need to think of your first camps as replacements as well. Stone seems to be particularly hard to get late in the game. This way, you won't get stuck when Africa turns into a desert.
Mid-Game Strategy
For any "Catan" game, the strategies remain simillar. The main point that I want to emphasize here, works for pretty much any "Catan" game. So I will just sum it up right here: Watch what you opponents are doing. Some things are lost causes. Pick your battles wisely and always play to your strengths. And do not let your opponents know what you are going to do! Try your hardest to the the expansion card. It's worth 2 VPs that no one can take away. The person who gets it usually wins the game. When you get to the upper level advances, this means 3, do not just inch up one at a time, hoping to eventually get the bonus victory point that comes at level 5. It is probably better to move two levels at once. And if someone already has the fifth level, only build as many levels as you need. Don't waste resources.
End-game/Winning Strategy
I am not currently putting anything in this section until I've played the game more.
