Writer: Chase "The Paper Ace" Willey Mega Man III for Game Boy is one of my favorite Mega Man titles. It's a tough one to beat, so I thought I'd write a FAQ on beating it. Writing FAQs for platformers is a very hard task. Unfortunately, for me, I love platformers. I'll try my best to make this an informative FAQ. == COPYRIGHT == MEGA MAN and all related characters are trademarks of Capcom of America. All rights reserved. USING MEGA MAN -------------- This is simple. Mega Man's powers haven't been altered for a long time. Press the A button and Mega Man will jump. Simple enough. Tapping A will make him basically "hop," while holding it longer will make him jump higher. Pressing the B button makes him use his currently equipped weapon (see Section 2). Use the D-pad to run (move) or to climb up or down ladders. Hold down and press A to slide, used to go under narrow passage ways. That's about it. When Mega Man is in water, he jumps much higher, so be careful not to hit any dangers that may be above. Plus, hopping makes you go a lot higher. Even getting hit makes you bounce up pretty high. Oh, and getting hit. Getting hit is very annoying. Mega Man is pushed back and slowly moves backwards for a few seconds. Once you FINALLY regain control, you are temporarily invincible. Getting hit beside ledges is very annoying because you almost always fall off before regaining control. Watch where you get hit. GOAL OF GAME ------------ Like most Mega Man games, the goal is to select a stage, go through to the end of the stage, fight the boss, obtain his weapon, go to another stage, use that weapon on that boss (if the boss is weak to it), get new weapon, etc. Knowing which boss to start with is the hardest part, and knowing which boss to use the newly-obtained weapon on is even more difficult. How- ever, this guide will "guide" you through it. If you are a true blue Mega Man fan, you'll play a while and only check this FAQ when you get stumped. Part of the fun of the game is knowing which boss is weak to which weapon. TIPS AND HINTS -------------- - At some points of the game, making a jump over a pit can be tough. The ceiling may be low, so timing it just right is difficult. Jump at the very end of the pit, right when you'd expect to fall. This can be VERY difficult at times, but you need to master this technique if you are going to survive. - Shoot constantly. Developing a fast finger is important when battling a boss up-close-and- personal. Note that only 3 shots can be on the screen at once. If you shoot all 3 and miss, you have to wait till all 3 leave the screen before your barrage can begin again. - Since Mega Man can't duck, to get under some enemy attacks (Punk's high rolling attack comes to mind), you have to slide. You are completely vulnerable while sliding, so learn how to use this technique wisely. - Mega Man can power his Mega Buster shots. Never go into a new area without it charged, just in case. Same goes when fighting bosses that are weak to the Mega Buster. - DON'T TOUCH SPIKES! One hit deaths, no matter what. Spiked balls also count. _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ SECTION 2 - WEAPONS AND ITEMS _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ This section covers each weapon in the game. MEGA BUSTER ----------- This is Mega Man's main weapon. It has unlimited ammunition, so it's the only weapon he can use at any time. It's extremely weak, but you can fire shots quickly. Only 3 shots are allowed on the screen at once; keep this in mind. Mega Man can also charge his shot. Hold B and he'll begin to flash. Release while he's slowly flashing to shoot an Energy Sphere, only slightly stronger than a normal Mega Buster bullet. Release when he's flashing quickly for a Power Shot, the most powerful shot he has. It's very powerful, so don't miss! SHADOW BLADE ------------ Mega Man can aim the boomerang-like ninja blade. Hold in the direction (up or up-forward) and he'll throw it in that direction. If you're really skilled, you can even throw it backwards. SPARK SHOCK ----------- The weak Spark Shock has little use outside of defeating Snake Man. The electric ball will paralyze an enemy, but paralyzing an enemy when it's STILL in your path is a bad idea. And switching weapons will get rid of the ailment. Just forget this weapon altogether. SEARCH SNAKE ------------ This odd weapon throws a baby snake down that travels across the ground. It will also climb up walls (but not on ceilings). If used in the air, it will simply fall straight down until it hits ground; useful for attacking enemies from above. GEMINI LASER ------------ The Gemini Laser is very powerful, but also very slow. It also bounces off of walls, floors, and ceilings. So, it's possibility of hitting something are rather big. SKULL BARRIER ------------- Like Spark Shock, don't bother with this weapon. Skulls surround Mega Man and act as a shield. The shield disappears when it hits something, and you can't turn it off unless you switch weapons (which is very inconvenient). It's only useful for defeating Drill Man. Other wise, don't bother at all. DRILL BOMB ---------- The powerful Drill Bomb will shoot a drill out, which triggers a rather big explosion when it collides with something. It can also destroy the striped barriers that deflect other attacks. It's definitely a powerful catch. HOMING TORPEDO -------------- Here's a great weapon. It will home after the nearest enemy incredibly fast and do major damage. It's perfect for destroying enemies while trying to climb a ladder (I hate getting hit on a friggin' ladder). DUST MISSILE ------------ The fat Dust block seems useless, but it will shatter into four pieces when it hits an enemy. The pieces will each travel in their own direction. The pieces can harm other enemies as they travel. Unfortunately, the powerful weapon is not needed to defeat any boss. SCREW CRUSHER ------------- This weapon is odd. Mega Man throws a razor blade upwards, then it falls downwards. It's good for hitting enemies that are higher than you. Plus, it has tons of weapon energy so it can be used over and over again. It's about the same strength at the Mega Buster, though. RUSH UPGRADES ------------- Some bosses give two weapons: their weapon and a Rush. Rush Coil allows Mega Man to call Rush down. Jump on Rush and he'll spring you upwards. Rush Jet will call Rush down and he'll turn into a flying board. Hop on and begin the ride. He'll vanish if you hit a wall, so be careful. While Rush is called out, pressing B uses the Mega Buster, but you can't charge. ITEMS ----- Life - The black balls with a white center refill energy. Weapon - These are cubes with a circle in them. They refill energy for your currently-equipped weapon. Both life and Weapon come in small and large sizes. Helmet - Get the helmet for an extra life. E Tank - Once collecting an E Tank, use it on the pause menu to restore all of your life. _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ SECTION 3 - WALKTHROUGH _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ SHADOW MAN ---------- Shadow Man's stage is pretty easy. At the start, the bomb platforms are spread throughout the environment. Stand on one to begin a countdown. Get out of the way! When it reaches 0, it explodes! Sliding under narrow passages is important in this stage. In some areas, a Shadow Machine (on the ceiling) will make everything dark so you can only see you and enemies. Destroy the Shadow Machine to get rid of this effect. In some areas, you'll have to jump across platforms with water (don't fall in, it's really a pit). Enemies will parachute down, so destroy them quickly before they knock you off! BOSS STRATEGY: He'll hop around a while, then quickly either slide kick or throw Shadow Blades. Either way, you have to jump to avoid them. Repeatadily use Power Shots and avoid him to win. Don't get hit too much; your life quickly decreases. SPARK MAN --------- His stage is slightly harder. At the start, there are electric pads on the ceiling and floor. They'll move and create a lightning bolt in between them. Learn their pattern and jump through when the bolts are gone. Also, there are rising platforms. Stand on them and they'll slowly rise ... towards the spikes on the ceiling! Oh, I must have forgotten ... spikes are one-hit deaths no matter what. Don't touch them! In some areas, there are machines that drop garbage blocks. Destroy them and quickly run by or another block will be created and crush you. There's an annoying pit that's hard to jump over, plus a machine at the very end, so you have to be quick to get across. BOSS STRATEGY: Use the Shadow Blade for a quick victory. He'll shoot sparks in multiple directions. They are slow, so they are easy to avoid. He sometimes charges a rather big shot. Just hop over it. SNAKE MAN --------- Snake Man's stage is a little easier. In some areas, you have to fight giant snakes while standing on their wiggling bodies. Aim for the head, using Power Shots, and avoid his shots as best as you can. At some point, you fight Droppers and Bouncers. The Droppers will drop their bombs on you, then keep flying. Avoid the bomb, then shoot them. Bouncers run at you, stop right in front of you, and jump over you. Then they run at you from behind. A Power Shot takes them out real quick, but they are invulnerable until they jump. Once you reach the sky, be careful with the claws on the ladders. When they are open, they can't hurt you, but when they clamp down on the ladder is when you have to be careful. BOSS STRATEGY: Snake Man is easy since all of his attacks travel only on the ground. He runs at you, so jump over him. The Spark Shock takes him out fast. * You get Rush Coil as an extra prize from Snake Man. GEMINI MAN ---------- Boy, this is a fun stage. The beginning is a tad annoying, however. The penguins will throw their stomaches as bombs at you, so destroy the annoyances quickly. Once you enter the cavern, you'll find tons of fish eggs. Shoot one and a tadpole emerges and begins to chase you slowly. Shoot it again to destroy it. Destroying the fish eggs are required to proceed since they blow your path. Use a Power Shot to eliminate an entire row instantly. When you have to fight the giant Penguins, aim for the turning crank on their foreheads and avoid the micro-penguins it shoots out of its stomache. Dragonflies also add to the excitement. Near the end, you have to cross over water with spikes in it. Do not fall! While passing from platform to platform, dragonflies try to knock you off. Be alert; this area is difficult. BOSS STRATEGY: Gemini Man is one annoying boss. He will split into two and run around. Keep an eye on the real one. He can also shoot a normal bullet like you, or his Gemini Laser. He's weak to the Search Snake, though it's hard to connect with it. GIANT SUZY ---------- You are forced to play this stage after finishing the first four robot masters. It's short, but somewhat difficult. You have to cross over pits using Magnet Platforms and Opener Plat- forms. Magnet Platforms will disappear and reappear in the same spots. Time when to jump correctly and go for it. Opener Platforms will open in the center as soon as you land on one, trying to drop you through. Hop as soon as you land on one to escape. BOSS STRATEGY: Giant Suzy is a big eyeball with suction-cups on each side. You fight in an extraordinarily narrow room. The Gemini Laser doesn't harm it, unlike I expected. Use Power Shots. Jumping and sliding are the ways to avoid it as it sticks to the walls. It's rather tough, but you can do it. * Spark Shock works well on him. SKULL MAN --------- The stage has skull robots. When you shoot them, they simply fall apart and can even hurt you while they are in a pile of bones. They'll slowly rejoin together. A Power Shot will kill them, so use them often. The stage is basically a normal stage until you reach the dark part. This area is a little more difficult, putting skull robots in hard to hit areas. Use Search Snake to get them out of the way. BOSS STRATEGY: Skull Man uses the Skull Barrier and jumps around. Wait until it's not activated and shoot him with a Power Shot. Basically avoid him and only shoot when his shield is down. DIVE MAN -------- Aquatic stages are always difficult on Mega Man games, and this one is no exception. At the start, fish will jump out of the water at you, so shoot 'em! When you have to go underwater, there are plenty of spikes to add to the fun. Since you jump higher in water, do not jump too high and hit them. This area is difficult, since helmet Metols swim around and bother you. Just try your best. BOSS STRATEGY: Dive Man is weakened by the already weak Skull Barrier. Maybe it makes him laugh too hard? Anyway, use it and avoid his Homing Torpedoes the best you can. DRILL MAN --------- This is one difficult stage. The masked robots can only be shot from behind, and you have to slide under them to avoid them sometimes. In some areas, boulders drop from machines. Shoot them before they hit the ground or they split into tons of pieces; each piece can harm you. These boulders are dangerous. There are also plenty of spike traps in the dropping part of the stage. Use Rush Jet if you don't feel safe using the Droppers. BOSS STRATEGY: The Homing Torpedo works well on him. When he goes underground, he'll pop up where you stand so ... DON'T STAND STILL! Avoid his Drill Bomb and fire! DUST MAN -------- This stage is extremely difficult. It's basically a normal stage until you get to the falling ceiling. It slowly drops and rises. You have to make it over to the other side without getting crushed and being alert that there are enemies and spikes EVERYWHERE! BOSS STRATEGY: Use the Shadow Blade against Dust Man. You'd figure the Drill Bomb worked best, but it doesn't. Dust Man is a rather easy boss, making up for the hell you went through get- ting to him. If you just want to skip him, use the Super Password (See Section 4). * You get the Rush Jet for an extra prize from Dust Man. PUNK ---- Now, this is where the game heats up. This stage is just a boss battle; no stage to go through. BOSS STRATEGY: Punk seems very difficult, but he's not. Use Power Shots on him. He is only vulnerable when he's not curled into a ball, so keep that aware. When he curls up and fires himself at you, depending on his height, you have to either jump over him or slide under him. He goes fast, so you need good reaction here. Then he fires razors at you. Simply avoid them and shoot him. Repeat the pattern and you'll do fine. DR. WILY -------- Unlike most Mega Man games, Dr. Wily's castle is just one, long stage. This stage basically combines all of the other stages to make one, super hard stage. Use basic strategies for the rest of the stages to make your way through here. BOSS 1 STRATEGY: The giant Wily robot can only be hurt if you shoot him in the eyes, and only from the usage of Power Shots. He has a pattern. He fires crappy-homing torpedoes at you, then jumps to the other side of the screen. Shoot his eyes, avoid his torpedoes, move to where he was standing when he jumps, repeat. He's really quite easy. BOSS 2 STRATEGY: Shoot the dead robot and Dr. Wily emerges from the cockpit. He's very easy. Use the Screw Crusher against him. Avoid the little shots he fires at you, which are easy to avoid, and throw a Screw Crusher at him (the cockpit). The only problem is that the little balls he throws do tons of damage, so getting hit is bad. Stock up on E Tanks before venturing to battle him, and you'll do fine. It's gonna be a long battle since the Screw Crusher is weak, but you can do it! _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ SECTION 4 - SECRETS _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ SUPER PASSWORD -------------- Enter in the password A0, B0, C1, C2, B2 and you'll warp right to Punk's stage.
