The Gameplay:
The computer is smarter then in the first game, so you'll actually have to beat up your opponents to win. There are also still palm trees and such to dodge. The levels are simple, where you turn left or right to control and that's about it. No enemies except the trees and so on, the other characters aren't too bright to be harmful. Use the D-Pad to control and Button 2 accelerates, button 1 brakes.
One of the worst things is when your in first place, the computer will make your opponents go faster to catch up. So being in first at the last moment is the best tip, instead of heading in first at the first lap or beginning of the race.
There are more racers to choose from, but still only 4 can race at once. Each character has its own strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities:
Sonic (in the Cyclone): Very fast but poor handling, his special ability is the Dash, a temporary boost.
Tails (in the Whirlwind S7): Very well balanced with a special ability that lets him jump over obstacles or opponents.
Amy (in the Breeze): Has good acceleration but low speed, her special ability is throwing little hearts on the road that make opponents dazed and slow.
Eggman (in the Egg Typhoon): Sturdy chassis and very poor acceleration, his ability is to throw mines at opponents that make them stop and lose rings.
Knuckles (in the Tempest): Good handling and poor speed, he can jump if no ones around or punch oppoents, making them stop.
Fang (in the Marvelous Queen): Good acceleration, but poor handling. He throws oil balls at the track, making any one who drives over the spill to spin out of control.
Metal Sonic (in the Blue Devil): A faster and even more poor handling than Sonic. He has a better Dash but uses up 3 rings when used.
There are 3 Chaos GP's, in order of difficulty: Purple, White, or Blue. Each GP consists of six courses, which are usually classic Sonic levels and a few original. To win you either go around a circled track 3 times or cross the finish line first.
Here are each GP and their tracks:
The Purple GP:
Emerald Hill 1, Hill Top 1, Dark Valley 1, Casino Night, Desert Road 1, and Iron Ruin.
The White GP:
Emerald Hill 2, Hill Top 2, Desert Road 2, Rainy Savannah, Ice Cap, and Mystic Cave.
The Blue GP:
Dark Valley 2, Quake Cave, Balloon Panic, Emerald Ocean, Milky Way, and Death Egg.
This is the scoring in Chaos GP mode:
3 points to get first place, 2 for second, and 3 for third. For first place, you win a Chaos Emerald. To view the ending you must get all 6. To get to the Final GP, you must score a perfect on the Blue GP. The Final GP is against the leader of the opposing team. If your Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy, you'll race against Eggman in the Death Egg. If your Eggman, Fang, or Metal Sonic, you'll then race Sonic in the Death Egg.
Besides the main game, there's a Free Run mode where you just practice. You can also use Gear-to-Gear to play against a friend with the game as well. The Options menu lets you choose difficulty settings of Normal or Hard. The difference of difficulty is the obstacles and enemy strengths.
