Sonic Labyrinth Game Gear Official Review By Dreadknux
Sonic Labyrinth. The Game Gear's turn to host an original Sonic game.

Another try at making Sonic more than just a platform game, this time for the Game Gear, and having only played it on an emu, I must say that it is pretty addictive. I don't really know the story to this game, and if I did, the plot would probably be some confusing tripe trying to convince us that Sonic needed to be put on a puzzle game. Believe us Sega, we don't need convincing! So, as far as I know, the Chaos emeralds are missing. Again. Sonic has vowed to search for them, knowing Eggman is the cause of things. But Eggman has set a labyrinth trap for our blue spiky friend. Can Sonic survive?

Nut Crackers! Ow, bet that's painful...
'I got all the keys!' Great sonic, now wouldn't you like to get to exit? 'Why? I GOT THE KEYS!' Silly boy.
Alright, so it's not the 'Exit' it's the 'Goal' for all you irritating people who have nothing better to do than stick your eye to the screen to discover every last detail that people make. You make me sick! Actually, hmmmmmm...

Sonic Labyrinth, then. The graphics are 2D but made for a 3D effect. Don't know HOW, exactly, but neh... In this game you play as Sonic, collecting keys from the stages to exit the level. Of course, there are certain enemies that try to stop you from getting those keys, and they range from normal badniks to spikes and bumpers. You have to collect all three keys, and reach the exit gate within the time limit, and if you get attacked, then you lose the keys you held, and you must collect them again.

At the fourth stage of every Labyrinth level, there is a robot boss to contend with. This is shortly after a special level, where you can gain a few things before the trip to the big bad boss. Defeat the boss and you gain a Chaos emerald, yeah! Your aim is to collect all of these, so get used to it! ^_^

There are many items you can collect during a stage. They appear as coloured arrows that change their colour every second or so. Run up to the arrows when they have changed a certain colour and you will get a certain power up, like red for Invincibility. Before you ask, yes you can do the spin dash, just in case its a race against the clock, but hitting bumpers and the like while dashing screws you up divinely.

Although it's original, it's a bit of an oddity this one. It's exciting to play, sure, it's Sonic - but there's an element of tedium in playing the game somewhat. All it seems to be at the end of the day is run about a bit (and slowly, may I add) collect keys and head for the exit within the time limit. Seeings as the speed of the game is immensely slow, it doesn't help matters. But for what it's worth, it's a different title, maybe for the adventure purist Sonic fan perhaps, and worth a bit of a look. Don't expect to come back to it though - no save functions at all help mock this game to a lower level in the Sonic games pile.

Sonic Score: 6 out of 10!

He thinks he's so tough 'cos he's got little black bubble things running around him. If I were big, strong muscley, weighed in at 1600 pounds, I could knock him out easy peasy!
'I got an emerald!' Great Sonic, now wouldn't you like to... Hang on a minute, I sense deja vu here! 'Don't matter. I GOT A CHAOS EMERALD!' Shut up!
'I got invincibility!' Great Sonic. Now wouldn't you like to... Ah forget it, leave him there! 'Hello? Hello? I-I Got... Invincibil...ity?'
