  The Story:
No sooner has Robotnik's Death Egg been knocked out of the sky than the doc begins construction of a superior model: the Death Egg II. Tails' transformable reconnaissance robot locates the machine in outer space and relays images to Tails' base. Our fox buddy throws together a spaceship to reach the Death Egg II, but there are a couple of problems: the ship requires power from the eight (yes, there are eight in this game) Chaos Emeralds to launch, and it only seats one. The Emeralds are scattered around the planet, in the possession of eight "guardians". One each with Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Nack the Weasel, Espio the Chameleon, Bark the Polarbear, and Bean the Dynamite. Sonic and Tails meet Knuckles on Floating Island to determine the best course of action. Knuckles points out that, since there's only room for one, only the strongest should go. Of course, he decides that he's the logical choice, and demands that Sonic give him his Chaos Emerald. Sonic, not being particularly fond of Knuckles' methods, prepares to start a fight. Just as the two are about to go the rounds, however, Tails interrupts the brawl with an idea: they hold a fighting tournament to determine the strongest one fair and square.

  !?!?!? DID YOU KNOW !?!?!?:
Sonic The Fighters was rumored to be included in a Sonic Jam 2 type compilation, which hasn't been official yet. Also, STF's was also supposed to be released on the Sega Saturn, but Sega thought a Sonic fighting game on Saturn wouldn't look right.

  The Gameplay:
Sonic The Fighters uses three controls, which are Punch, Kick, and Guard. Known as Sonic Championship in America, each character has shield Barriers at beginning of each round, after you guard a certian ammount, the shield Barrier will be worn down until the next round.

Manual and Automatic are the different gameplay modes. Manual is where you must push buttons to get different moves and combos, Automatic is an easier mode with out the use for button combos and harder to get moves.

The playable characters are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Espio, Fang, plus newcomers Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polarbear and Super Sonic. Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic are the final bosses, and not playable. If your player fights itself, then it'll become a black and white version of your character.

Here's each character and their moves:
Sonic the Hedgehog: Spin Attack
Miles 'Tails' Prower: Propeller Dash
Knuckles the Echidna: Knuckles Glider
Amy Rose: Magical Hammer
Espio the Chameleon: Tongue Attack
Fang the Sniper: Popgun
Bean the Dynamite: Bomb Attack
Bark the Polarbear: Throw
Bob Newhart: Belly Flop

Metal Sonic: Metal Sonic has every move of all the characters, takes off a lot of damage, and can shoot a laser.
Dr. Eggman: He has no special attacks, but you must defeat him in under 15 seconds to get the good ending.
Super Sonic: He's only accessed in round two against Metal Sonic, and have beaten every character with out losing a single round. Super Sonic has the same moves as Sonic, but is faster and can't be damaged.

The stages are as follows with the character you must fight there: South Island (Knuckles), Flying Carpet (Amy), Aurora Icefield (Bark), Mushroom Hill (Espio), Canyon Cruise (Tails), Dynamite Plant (Bean), Casino Night (Fang), Giant Wing (Sonic), Death Egg's Eye (Metal Sonic) and Death Egg's Hangar (Eggman).
