  The Story:
Sonic 3 takes place on a mysterious Floating Island which holds special powers. The source of the special powers are the Chaos Emeralds. In Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic & Tails thought that they had destroyed the Death Egg, which was Dr. Robotnik's heavily armored ship. Instead, Dr. Robotnik managed to crash land onto the Floating Island. After learning that the island is able to float in the sky by harnessing the Chaos Emeralds, the doc decides to steal the emeralds so he can repair his Death Egg ship.

To obtain the Chaos Emeralds, Dr. Robotnik tricks Knuckles, the guardian of the Floating Island's Chaos Emeralds. He also tells Knuckles that Sonic & Tails are the ones tring to steal the emeralds.

Between battling the new types of Badniks and tring to outsmart Knuckles, Sonic & Tails have their work cut out for them once they arrive on the Floating Island and search of Dr. Robotnik.

  The Gameplay:
One of the best Sonic games on the Genesis, especially if connected with Sonic & Knuckles. Tons of levels, two bosses per stage, and way cool 3D Special Stages, no wonder it's one of the best.

Choose from Sonic, Tails, or the new character if Sonic & Knuckles is hooked up to Sonic 3. The gameplay is juiced up a bit from former Sonic 2, just by a little. The character sprites are excellent looking, and there's more extra's to choose from. Like shields, you can get the regular shield that protects you from drowning, the electric one that's a magnent to Power Rings, or the fire shield that you can spin into a fire ball.

The new bonus levels are in full 3D,even more then Sonic 2 was. The thing is to collect the Blue Spheres, and if you collect a red one you lose. The yellow ones make you jump, and if you move around Blue ones by collecting them a way, they'll turn into rings. But the levels are to collect all the blue Spheres to win all 7 Chaos Emeralds.

This time, there's even more levels in the two player race mode, but the levels are created exclusively for the mode. Choose from three players to race, Sonic, Tails or Knuckles. There's extra things, like bananas to fall on, or even slow shoes to slow you or your opponent down.
