Super Mario 64 Walkthrough
Course 2: Whomp's Fortress

My walkthrough is designed to help you in your Bowser-battling and star-collecting journeys. Unlike some web pages, which only give info on getting stars, My walkthrough shows the exact directions to get the stars and secrets, plus info on the courses.

The goal of Mario 64 is to get back all 120 power stars in the castle that Bowser stole. I will give detailed directions for how to get each of them on every level. Good luck!

Level Description: Whomp's Fortress

Whomp's Fortress is located in the middle-right door of the castle's first floor. 1 star is needed to enter the level, which can be earned only in Bob-omb Battlefield.
Whomp's Fortress is the second course in SM64, and there is is a significant decrease in size when compared to Bob-omb Battlefield. Scattered in the level are sleeping Piranha Plants and vicious Whomps. A blue coin switch is also present. This is the first "Island Level" in the game, meaning that you can fall off the stage and automatically die.

Level Statistics:
coins: 141
cannons: 1
shells: 0
caps: 0 wing, 1 metal, 0 vanish
warps: 1
hearts: 0
blue coin switch: yes

Star 1: Chip Off Whomp's Block

Welcome to Whomp's Fortress, the second level of your journey. Take some time to explore before going up the ramp to the left. Jump over the moving wall pieces and sliding platforms to get to safer ground. There is a warp on the corner of this platform, but go up the other route anyways. Follow the arrows and avoid the Thwomps, and turn right and up another set of stairs. Kill the Pirahna Plant by punching it while it is asleep (walk slowly up to it).
Now, you can edge along the narrow platform or run *quickly* across the gray collapsing bridge. Get through however you like, and run past the Whomps and ride the rotating elevator. Also, if you climb all the way up the pole near the Whomps, you'll get a 1-up. Once at the top, you'll encounter with King Whomp, who is tired of you stepping on him and wants to fight. This time, stepping on him is just what you need to do--or stomping, I should say.

When the battle starts, The Whomp will try to smash you. Here's a hint: stay between his legs. When he falls down, simply run the other way. After he's down, quickly jump on him and butt-stomp the bandage on his back.
If you get hurt, you may want to go back down the mountain for some coins. After 3 hits, this guy's dust, leaving you with the first star.

Well, if you've been following my walkthrough completely, you should have 8 stars right now. That power enables you to go to the big star room on the top-left of the castle, where a surprise is waiting...

Star 2: To the Top of the Fortress

This time, like the title suggests, you're going to the top of the fortress. Go the same way as star #1, and you'll see that King Whomp has been replaced with a giant tower. Avoid the Bullet Bill and climb the moving steps up the fortress. It may take you a few tries.
NOTE: If you punch the shady side of the tower's base, a hole containing a 1-up will appear. When you get to the top, a star is waiting on the other side.

Star 3: Shoot Into the Wild Blue

From the start of the level, go up the ramps you usually do. Avoid the Thwomps, but when you turned right last time, go straight ahead downwards into the shallow pool. Go across the pool, and speak to the pink Bob-omb buddy, who will open up the single cannon in this level.

Hop in, and aim a little higher than the back pillar above the star.
A picture is worth a thousand words...

Shoot, slide down the pole, and retrieve your Power Star!

Star 4: Red Coins on the Floating Isle

Once again, you'll have to find the 8 red coins hidden in the level to get a star. Which works better: Trial and error, or reading below? You decide...

Red Coin #1: At the beginning of the level, on top of the second moving wall piece.
Red Coin #2: Get on the step above the second Thwomp, wait until he comes down, then jump on him. The second red coin is directly above Mario's head.

Red Coin #3: Atop the next flight of stairs is a Piranha Plant. Kill him, because there's a red coin hidden behind him.
Red Coin #4: In the area with the collapsing bridge, side-step along the right wall and grab this red coin. Don't get hurt by the Piranha Plant!
Red Coin #5: Simply ride the spinning bridge to snag this red coin. It's in the middle of four yellow coins.
Red Coin #6: On the slippery gravel incline underneath the two bridges. Long jump up the incline and run up to the coin. This one can be kind of hard to get. You can also fall off the spinning bridge to get it.
Red Coin #7: Go to the top of the level to find a big, upright piece of wood. punch it to make it wobble, and jump kick to make it fall, thus forming a bridge. Use it to get to the spinning islands in the sky, one of which holds the red coin.
Red Coin #8: This one's on another of the floating islands, not far from the previous one.

The Star appears all the way back at the beginning, near the first Piranha Plant in the flower bed.

Star 5: Fall Into the Caged Island

Climb the tree in the beginning of the level. An owl will pop out. Stand near its shadow and jump to get a hold of its talons.

Hold on! Use the control stick to steer the owl until you see a caged star on a brown floating platform.
Fly above the cage, let go of A, and get the star. Be fast! If you stay on the owl too long, he will drop you! Beginners and ameteurs will probably have a very tough time getting this star.

Star 6: Blast Away the Wall

This Star took me a long time to complete, since I didn't know what to do. Get to the cannon using the method in star 3, and hop in. Aim right, past the spinning bridge, and above the flimsy-looking brick wall.

Shoot, and the wall will break, leaving a star exposed. Get coins to recover your health, and shoot again in the same spot. Hopefully, you'll touch the star.

Star 7: 100 coins

Another 100 coin star... This one is extremely easy, however. there are 7 blue coins, plus 20 more for killing the Whomps*, plus the red coins...that equals 71 easy coins. not too hard, eh?

*10 coins from a whomp?! Well, you get an extra coin for the first five times you jump on a Whomp. Don't butt-stomp before you get all 5 coins!
