Solid Snake's rather nomadic past existenceand psychological profile made himperfect as a past deep operative. Previous missions have shown his exceptional ability to enter any enemy structure and compound under any situation (from Jungle terrain to Dessert war-fare). After being recruted for the Outer Heaven missionin the late 1990's, Solid Snakes subsequent success, professional approach to enemy disposal and dedication to the cause propelled the Fox-Hound organization into the spot light through out the world, enabling many more operatives to be hired. However, Solid Snake retired from the unite soon after the Outer Heaven crisis.
A man of Solid Snake's talents didn't rest long, and was contracted by the Central Intelligence Agency (or the CIA) to become a deep cover agent.Not content with the bureaucracy surrounding the organization (Solid Snake's main concurns, which were expressed rather vocally, were met with an almost constant rebuttal), Solid Snake's fought agenst the system before cutting all ties with the CIA. He dissapered into the underworld, earning a living for a number of years as a mercenarry and offering his services to the highest bidder.
Earning enough money to semi-retire (and needing a lengthy pause after a number of despotic dictators and other men of dishonor were assosiated), Solid Snake moved to the Canadian wilderness, wher he rehabilitated in deep suclusion . Only his old commander , Roy Camble, knew of Solid Snake's whereabouts, and Camble was quick to locate and hire him for a volatile situation that was developing in the Middle East. This war was later codenamed the Up-Rising of Zanzibar. Solid Snakes mission was to infiltrate and bring down the the military rulership of Zanzibar, along with its dictator, known as Big Boss.
After the aprent death of Big Boss and devolution of Zanzibar, Solid Snake returned to his solitary exsistance, this time retreating to remote area in Alaska called Twin Lakes (an area around 50 miles to the west of Mount McKinly). Finnaly at peace, Solid Sanke resided in a small log cabin, living off the abundance of wild plants and wildlife. During this time, Solid Snake develpeda particular taste forfor blueberrys and salmonberrys, and continued to block his mind from the past atrocities he had insured. Noot surprisingly, his past two missionshad lead to a psychological disorder known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He experienced intense hallucinations, guilt and flashbacks of the battlefeild trama, leading to increased mental confusion, a problem he attemp to banish by indulging in Husky sleigh racing and be friended an Eskimo from the Yup'ik tribe, who helped to traine the sleigh dogs. Solid Snake had just formally entered the Iditarod Sleigh Race and was preparing himself and his hounds for the trek. However, government forces and Solid Snake's old commander intervened at the last minute. Solid Snake was called into active service for one final sortie.
