Move 222:  Waiting For A Troll

Tunnels--Very Late, Day 9

Everyone took up position in the tunnels to see if they had indeed been followed by the trolls. Some lights were put away, but the ones remaining out left plenty of light all around. Time crept by at the same slow pace as it had while the scouts were gone. It was difficult to judge how long had passed between the anxiety of waiting for an attack and the tiredness that everyone was feeling that came over them as they sat still. After what seemed like it would have been long enough for the trolls to get there had they come immediately, nothing had happened.

Aloysius finally spoke up. "'Twould seem that the trolls are not coming," he said, stating what was for the time being, obvious. "Perhaps we should begin our watches so we can all get some rest. We'll need to think of a way to get closer to the trolls without alerting them to our approach, but that discussion should best take place after we are renewed somewhat."

Looking at the lighted area, he continued, "Methinks we may as well leave the light stone where it is for the time being. It may well serve as a boon to the sentries and I doubt it will prohibit anyone from resting."

Jana shrugged and agreed with Aloysius, "Might as well. Hey, Echo, how long'll that spell keep you invisible?"

"It should last a day from the time I cast it," Echo replied. "Unless I attack something."

Arachne stirred from the doze she'd fallen into.  "Won't it last until she does something she might regret?" she asked.  "That could be a while."  She yawned and stretched.  "OK, so we'll rest for real before going and getting ourselves killed.  When's my watch?"  She looked around vaguely.  "Blacky?  You always know that sort of thing."

"I think you and I are on middle watch or was it me and Daelen.  Either I'm getting old or all this being underground is starting to get to me." Blacky replied "Would the rest of you put out those lights, I don't want to attract anymore of those white furries."

Aloysius began arranging his blanket and pack so he could go to sleep. "Perhaps we should employ a more traditional form of illumination for the time being," he suggested. "Does anyone have a lantern?"

"Indeed I do," Rennirolas nodded as he unstrung his bow.  "And when we have established the camp, I'll set the Wyvern warding, as a bit of extra protection," Renn added.

Renn left his bow and mace by his gear, and untied the lantern from his pack.  "There's something comforting about a flame that you just don't get from a summoned light isn't there," the elf said with a smile as he left the lantern with Aloysius.

He advanced to the edge of the camp closest to the trolls lair, about twenty feet out of the light.  After a short chanted prayer to Corellon, Rennirolas returned.  "Avoid getting within ten feet of the ward, there is no way to make it selective," he shrugged.  "And should the trolls advance during our camp, the ward will keep one of them held for a few minutes at best."

Renn left his bow and mace by his gear, and untied the lantern from his pack.  "There's something comforting about a flame that you just don't get from a summoned light isn't there," the elf said with a smile as he left the lantern with Aloysius.

"Indeed," said Aloysius, taking the lantern.  Placing one of his flasks inside the lantern, he worked with his flint and steel until the lantern was lit.

"There," he said when finished.  "This will give our sentries a bit of light.  I'll leave this other flask next to the lantern.  That should keep it going until we are all rested."

"How many flasks do we have available now?" he asked the group generally.
