Gascony

Doug-About

A successful attack upon France is rarely complete without a sojourn to Gascony. A historic region of southwestern France, in the game of diplomacy it borders the fruitful centres of Brest, Paris and Marseilles, with Spain on the south. A rogue unit in Gascony, has frequently caused the downfall of an otherwise strong France, especially if committed against Italy with lots of fleets. Auch was the capital of Gascony when French provinces were administrative units. In 1052 the duchy of Gascony became a fief of Guienne, or AQUITAINE, with which it was linked during the period of English rule from 1152 until annexation by the French crown in 1453. Few people realise that this and parts of Calais and Brittany were English for hundreds of years, either through intermarriage or conquest. It was in this region that Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner, whilst returning to England from the crusades. Perhaps the next time you conquor this zone you could celebrate with some Armagnac Brandy, a product of this region.
