Located on the Penfeld River, it is an important commercial port and naval base. The population is 156,060 (1982). The growth of the city began in 1631 when Cardinal Richelieu improved the sheltered harbor and established a naval base. In 1683 the town was fortified and a castle was built. The English and Dutch were defeated here in 1694, and the French lost a battle to the English here in 1794. During World War I, Brest served as a supply base and demarcation point for U.S. troops. Occupied by the Germans during World War II, Brest was heavily damaged by Allied bombing; it has since been largely rebuilt.Border territories
