Knowing what
the enemy is doing/planning is essential to a successful game. There
are specific units and structures that are key to reconnaissance. It's
crucial that you find out what your enemy is planning so you can counter
it with minimal lose. Most importantly, find out what the enemy is
not ready for.
Note: Locate
the enemy base as soon as possible. Also try to locate other expansions.
Scouting Units
- Any unit can
be used as a scout, but obviously some are better suited than others.
- The timing of spying is very important; do it as soon as
possible.

There are several
places where you will want to have a set of "eyes":
- All strategic chokepoints
- Just beyond the
entrance to your base and your expansions (and your allies')
- Just beyond the
entrance to the enemy base and their expansions
- Any un-owned expansions
- Directly inside
an enemy base if at all possible
Detecting Cloaked Units
You also want
to be prepared for cloaked units. The following recon units
allow you to see cloaked enemy units:
- Protoss Observer
- Terran Science Vessel
- Zerg Overlord
The following structures
allow you to see cloaked units:
- Protoss Photon
