Rowner Cricket Club Newsletter. January 2005

Dear members, families and friends of Rowner Cricket Club,

A very happy and prosperous New Year to you all and welcome to the opening newsletter of 2005 and the initial stirrings of a new cricket season. It has been a busy few months since the last newsletter in August 2004 and the end of the last cricket season and although there has been no cricket played since last September, there has been a lot of activity behind the scenes. I will give you a brief run down on what has been happening for the benefit of those of you who were unable to attend the various activities and new members. Before I start, here is my traditional plea:

Email address.

If you receive this newsletter by post and you have an email address, please let me have it. Future correspondence can then be sent to you by email, which will help to reduce the club's expenditure.

Anniversary Dinner.

The Anniversary Dinner was held at the Masonic Hall, Clarence Road, Gosport on Friday 10 September 2004 and for those of you who don't know, this was to celebrate both the 50th and 40th anniversary of Rowner Cricket Club. Rowner Cricket Club was born in 1954 and for 10 years fought under the banner of Bridgemary Cricket Club. In 1964 the club started playing cricket on our current home ground, Rowner Green when it changed its name to Rowner Cricket Club.

60 members, families and friends attended the dinner during which we were entertained by speeches from Shaun Udal, the current Hampshire County Cricket Club vice captain, Councillor Peter Edgar who has been involved in all levels of sport in Gosport for more years than he would care to remember and from our chairman, Chris Davis.

Our grateful thanks go the Stuart Bates who, through all his hard work, made the very enjoyable evening possible.

Presentation Evening.

The Presentation Evening was held on Friday 15 October 2004 at the Gosport and Fareham Civil Service Club, Fareham Road, Gosport. Almost 100 attended in support of the club where they enjoyed a splendid buffet supper provided by our Catering Manager, Pat Bowman and her team of hard working volunteers. To complement the evening there was a disco and karaoki, which proved to be very successful. I shall not report on the karaoki to preserve the 'street cred' of those who had the courage to get up and have a go except to say well done, it was a very good effort by you all and provided some great entertainment. Read into that what you will!

The following awards were made during the evening:

Saturday 1XI Batting Award - Jim Kemp
Saturday 1XI Bowling Award - Jason Hoskins
Saturday 2XI Batting Award - Matt Darby
Saturday 2XI Bowling Award - Cris Kemp
Sunday XI Player of the year - Glen Lambeth
Colts Under 15 Batting Award - Michael Burgess
Colts Under 15 Bowling Award - Michael Burgess
Colts Under 13 Batting Award - Bradley Johns
Colts Under 13 Bowling Award - Elliott Candy
Awards in recognition of their valuable service to Rowner CC during 2004 were made to Stuart Bates and Dave Patmore.
Chairman's Trophy - Glen Lambeth
Clubman of the Year - Andy Stancliffe
Colts Under 15 Manager's Fielding Shield - Thomas Whyld
Colts Under 13 Manager's Fielding Shield - Daniel Scott
Most improved young player 2004 - Bradley Johns

Medals were also presented to those colts that had represented the club both at under 15 and under 13 level. Not every colt that represented the club was able to attend the Presentation Evening so a number of medals remain unpresented. If any of those colts would like to contact me, I will arrange for their medal to be passed on to them.

A special award was made to Glen Lambeth, the club's overseas player, in recognition and appreciation of his efforts during the 2004 season of a club cap, inscribed with his name and a framed action photograph of him batting on Rowner Green. He returned to Australia on 18 October 2004 and we hope that he will be back with us for this season.

Awards were also made to Pat Bowman and Jean Burgess in recognition of their valuable contribution in providing catering support throughout the season, an integral part of any club and also to Maureen and Neil Stevens, Pauline and Dave Cook, Sue and Graeme Mowat and Sue Whyld in grateful recognition for all they had done for the club during the 2004 season.

Annual General Meeting.

The Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 16 November 2004 and the following were elected to be your committee for the 2005 season:

Chairman - Chris Davis - 023 92 351842 - email - chris.davis@gosport.gov.uk
Treasurer - Pat Bowman - 01329 - 315683
Secretary - Rod Kemp - 023 92 587170 - email - kempcornwell@tiscali.co.uk
Fixture Secretary - Andrew Lilley - 07799 071414 - email - andrew.lilley@aspect.com
Saturday 1XI Captain - Jason Hoskins - 07989 273937 - email - jhoskins@eltafans.co.uk
Saturday 2XI Captain (hopefully) - Andy Stancliffe - 07929 440665 - email - Flyerthree@Doolallymansions.freeserve.co.uk
Sunday XI Captain - Jim Kemp - 07743 858716 - email - Joeyp50@hotmail.com
Elected Officer - Rob Bowman - 07709 836889 - email - Robert.Bowman@cps.gsi.gov.uk/R0bert.B0wman@ntlworld.com

In addition to the above, two further positions have been created on the committee. They are a colt's co-ordinator and a colt's administrator. The reason for this is because membership of the colts section grows annually, we have three qualified coaches, Jim Kemp, Rob Bowman and Tom Stevens who were being swallowed up in the administration of the colts section rather than concentrating on their primary purpose of training and coaching of our young players. To relieve them of the administrative burden, Graeme Mowat has volunteered to carry out the function of colt's co-ordinator and Pauline Cook has volunteered to be the colt's administrator. If you have any queries whatsoever concerning colt's matters please contact either Graeme or Pauline. Contact details are:

Colts Co-ordinator - Graeme Mowat - 023 92 513214 - email - to be notified
Colts Administrator - Pauline Cook - 023 92 783664 - email - daco30ba@ntlworld.com

Annual Club Subscription.

Despite my reminder in the August 2004 newsletter to club members who had not paid their annual subscription at the time, there are still four members who have not yet paid their membership dues for last year and this is despite my having written to each of them personally. I will be writing to them again but, if they haven't paid what is owing for last year and what is due for this year by 31 March 2005, they will no longer be members of the club and will not be available for selection.

For those of you that did pay, the club is grateful to you. We have considerable expenditure during the first four months of the year, which in the past has presented the club with something of a problem, as our income does not start to arrive until pre season nets commence and members start paying their annual club subscription. This is why, every year, I ask for you to pay your subscription as early as possible. By doing so you ease the pressure placed upon the club's limited financial reserves.

This year we have had to bring the due date forward from 30 April 05 to 31 March 2005. This is for insurance purposes. The club has an insurance policy, which covers its members in the event of any accident occurring whilst representing the club. To be covered, you have to be a club member and to be a club member you have to have paid your membership fee. Again, if you haven't paid you will not be selected to play.

Our annual expenditure is somewhere in the region of £7000, which for a small club such as ours, is quite a considerable amount of money. It is also a large of sum of money for a small club such as ours to raise each year to cover our expenditure. It is also a large sum of money for our Treasurer, Pat Bowman, to account for. This is another reason why it is important that members pay their dues promptly and correctly and for Pat to have an accurate breakdown of income and expenditure from club officials.

2005 Subscription Rates.

The subscription rates for 2005 are being kept the same as for 2004. Full member - £40 (£35 if paid by 28 Feb 05). Students/juniors/colts - £20 (£15 if paid before 28 Feb 05). For each family member thereafter - £10. Please note the £3 of your annual subscription will cover your entry to the 2005 Presentation Evening. The adult match fee will be £5 and for students/juniors/colts it will be £2.50 whether playing in either adult or colts fixtures. Opposition teas (friendly or Sunday fixtures) £35.

A membership application/renewal form is attached. Please complete it and return it to the Treasurer, Pat Bowman, at the address shown with your subscription by 28 Feb 05 to qualify for your reduction.

2005 Season.

The 2005 season will commence on Sunday 10 April 2004 with a home fixture against Alton CC. The first Saturday fixture will be on 16 April when it is intended to have a Rowner CC Club game, which will take place on Rowner Green. The first league fixture is on Saturday 7 May when Rowner 1XI are at home to Midhurst with the 2XI away to Locks Heath.

Colts fixtures have not yet been received but the leagues normally start the first weekend in May with the under 15s playing on a Friday evening commencing at 6.00 pm and the under 13s playing on a Sunday morning commencing at 10.00 am. The colts league programme normally continues until the end of July.

Nets.

Adult nets will again be held in the Sports Hall at Brune Park Community School. By popular request, we are holding them on a Sunday this year from 4.00 pm until 6.00 pm. The following dates have been confirmed, 13 Mar, 20 Mar and 3 Apr (27 Mar is a bank holiday).

Dates for colts training have not yet been decided. Graeme and the coaches are in discussion and once a decision has been made either Graeme or Pauline will contact you to let you know what the arrangements are.

New Members.

We are always on the lookout for new members to strengthen our three adult teams and our two colt's teams. I have just started the annual advertising campaign for new members for both the adult and colts sections of the club. The campaign consists of posters displayed throughout the Borough and a notice in Coastline, which is delivered to every household in the Borough in March. We also advertise in the Advertiser which is distributed throughout Lee on Solent, Stubbington, Hill Head, Peel Common, Titchfield and parts of Gosport together with notices in The News. We are also very keen to have girls participating at colt's level so if you know of anyone, either male or female, who plays cricket and is looking for a club to join, please try to recruit them. Also let me, Graeme or Pauline know and we will contact them.

Umpires and Scorers.

We are also on the lookout for two umpires and two scorers for Saturdays and an umpire and scorer for Sundays. Do you know of anyone capable of umpiring in the Hampshire League on a Saturday afternoon or who would like to become a club scorer? Do you know of anyone who would like to umpire or score on a Sunday? If you do, please let me know and I will contact them.

Courses.

There are training courses available which are organised by the Hampshire Cricket Board. At the moment, Jim Kemp, Rob Bowman and Tom Stevens have attended a coaching course and are fully qualified coaches and Maureen Stevens is currently attending a scorer's course at the Rose Bowl. There is an acute shortage of umpires in the Hampshire League and clubs are being given every encouragement to discover people who, after training, will be able to either stand as umpires in the League, officiate as scorers, another very important function or coach and train within their clubs. If anyone would like to attend any of these courses, please let me know. I will make the necessary arrangements and the club will pay for you to attend.

Club Clothing.

Owing to a considerable amount of work by Rob Bowman over the last few months, we are now in a position to obtain club clothing for members. At the moment only track tops and caps are available but before the cricket season gets under way, Rob hopes to be able to provide you with club embroidered cricket shirts and jumpers. Plain caps are available at a cost of £6.50 and the price includes embroidery of the club badge on the front. Your cap can also be embroidered with you name or nickname on the reverse in addition to the club badge on the front at a cost of £8.00.

Rowner track tops are available at £22. They come with the club logo embroidered on the front and Rowner CC on the back. Should you wish you can have your name or nickname also embroidered on the track top but that will cost extra. I have attached a leaflet giving more details and should you wish to purchase either item, please contact Rob direct.

Indoor Cricket League.

Andy Lilley reports that at the moment Rowner CC are currently top of Division 4 of the Indoor Cricket League. We have played 5, won 4 and lost 1 with 4 fixtures left to play. Andy says that our position is due to good all round team performances rather than any outstanding individual performances.

2004 Season.

Although 2004 was something of a landmark in the history of the club, on the field of play it has to be said that it was a disappointing season with our 1XI being demoted from County Division Two to County Division Three. Our main problem was not being able to bowl the opposition out and only being able to win one game out of seven at home whereas in the previous year we won six out of nine at home.

I regret that at the time of going to press, no statistics are available for the colts for the 2004 season. If they become available, I will publish them in the March Newsletter.
