Nintendo had four games showcasing the GAMECUBE's power although there were far more games present. First was Luigi's Mansion with it's intuitive gameplay and sophisticated lighting techniques. Second up was the much-to-fun Super Smash Bros. Melee with 4-player ability and a handful of great characters. Thirdly was the very intriguing Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet, which mixed old school space shooter levels with Zelda-esque adventure levels. Lastly but certainly not least was Pikmin. It was one of the only two games actually running off a GC optical disc and let me tell you there was NO LOAD TIME! The idea behind Pikmin is a mix between strategy and simulation and combines the two beautifully. The controls are quite simple but do take some getting used to. The analog stick moves your spaceman around while the big turquoise "A" button blows a whistle that will organize or call forth your Pikmin. Once you have called on at least three or four Pikmin it is time to let the games begin. Using the "B" button players can order their Pikmin to chop down trees or attack enemies. Once this task is fulfilled you can order them once again to carry the remnants back to the mother ship where the items will be converted to more Pikmin for your ever growing army. There are three colors of Pikmin. Red, blue and yellow each with their own strengths and weaknesses. The red Pikmin are resistant to fire while the yellow Pikmin can jump very high reaching hard to find places. The blue's abilities haven't been confirmed yet by Nintendo but I'm guessing they have the ability to cross bodies of waters or even dive under the lakes to fight enemies underwater. One time I had up to 120 Pikmin following me at once and let me tell you it is a sight to see. I should have taken a picture but I was too enthralled in the game to stop playing. One Pikmin might be able to destroy one weaker enemy while some of the other bigger badder enemies could take up to twenty or more! The coolest part has to be the function of the C-stick. With the camera stick you can move your group of Pikmin around while you move at the same time! The C-stick allows you to command them easier and more fluidly. From what Miyamoto-san told the press on Thursday the finished version of Pikmin will allow you to build forts and gardens to grow new and evolved Pikmin. The cute little ant people will even be able to build bridges across water to reach other lands. One more thing; The longer you keep your baby Pikmin planted in the ground the stronger they become by sprouting more leaves and then eventually budding revealing a colorful flower atop their head. This was my pick for game of the show and I think you'll agree come September. (November for people not importing) |
