Evolution was the second RPG out on the Dreamcast, despite it's claims as first - Metro 3D's Armada was the first. Sting's shot at the RPG genre was a good one, but it's certainly no Final Fantasy. You are Mag Launcher, who's family is deeply in debt, and it's up to you to pay off the Society. So off you go to venture into uncharted caves to pay the debt of 80,000 credits. So, there you go into annoying randomized dungeons filled with treasure and hideous monsters. The Graphics, while not complicated, were nice and cartoon-like. This is nice as most games nowadays go for a serious approach to everything. All the characters were designed rather well and the game shows the Dreamcast's poly-busting power. The only problem I noticed was in the dungeons where the gaps between the walls were not textured. This was not much of a problem though, but just one of those little things. The sound on the other hand was a give-and-take situation. The dungeon music was nice and way too cool, but as for the rest of the music (in town and the CG's) it sounded as if you were at a circus. The sound FX also were the same: Just too mediocre. In fact. I suggest you find the mute button your telly and use it like there's no tomorrow when you are in town. The control was easy, but sort of uninspired. It's also up to you, if you level or not, because there are no random battles. You see the enemy, so you can avoid them. Maneuvering around can be tricky because the shadows on the wall prevent you from seeing yourself or your enemy. The replay value also lagged a bit due to the fact that this adventure isn't long enough. With only 5 dungeons to explore (your debt is paid off after the fifth dungeon), then it's all over. You, also, have only one town to visit and a small number of characters to interact with. Where are the rest of the cities on this world?? Hmm? Overall, Evolution is a decent RPG - (warning to hardcore RPGer's you might want to avoid this title as it is too easy). If you are new to the RPG genre, or just sick and tired of all those damn racing, fighting and actiongames, this baby is for you.
