This was written by: Tony Hedstrom t.hed@excite.com This document explains in great detail, how to make your own Game Genie like codes (or cheats) for almost any game that you can play on an emulator. This method even works on regular computer games. In some ways, this method is even better than real Game Genie codes because you can use these codes at ANY point in the game, not just at the very start of the game, like some GG codes. So remember, you can use this method on Nintendo games, Super Nintendo games, GameBoy games, Sega Genesis games, etc... Just as long as you have an emulator and a ROM for that system. This method is especially useful for games that don't have any Game Genie codes. Emulators and ROMs can be found all over the internet, and they're usually free. There is the issue of legality, but I won't go into that here. I'll just say that emulators are completely legal, and some ROMs are in a "grey" zone as far as being legal. For an example, I'm going to use Final Fantasy 1 for NES because many people are familiar with that game. Just remember, that you can use this method in almost exactly the same way on SNES games, GB games, Sega games, etc... Here's a list of things that you'll need: 1: An emulator for the system you want (i.e. NESticle, ZSNES, KGEN98, etc.) 2: The ROM for the game you want codes for 3: A program called "Cheat-O-Matic" (which can be found on my Download page). You can also get it from: http://www.3drealms.com/bio/shaffner.html OK, lets get started. In this example, we will be looking for a code to change the amount of gold that we have, but you can also find codes for many, many other things as well. As soon as you see how easy it is to find the code for Gold, you can use the same technique to find codes for other things. 1) First, start up your emulator (in this case, I'm using NESticle) and load the ROM (in this case, Final Fantasy). Name your 4 players and start the game. 2) Walk into the town. As soon as you are in the town, pause the game. Now, look at the amount of Gold that you have (in this case it's 400). Write the amount down on a piece of paper. 3) Now press "Alt" + "Tab" together. This will minimize the emulator screen. 4) Find the "Cheat-O-Matic" program and double click on it (run it) (it may be named just "Omatic.exe"). 5) In the Cheat-O-Matic window that opened, click on the arrow button on the top, right hand side. Pick the emulator program (in this case, NESticle) from the list and click on it. 6) Now, in the bottom left hand corner, type in the number that you wrote down before (in this case, 400). Click on the "Search" button. Wait until the program finishes searching, which can take up to one minute. 7) As soon as the program finishes searching, click on the emulator tab in the task bar to maximize the emulator screen (Or you can also hold down the "Alt" key and press the "Tab" key until you get the right program, then release the "Alt" key). 8) Now you are back at the game. Unpause the game and go to the weapon shop (or anyplace that you can spend money). Buy anything from the shop. (In this case, a small knife for $5.) Now write down the new amount of Gold you have left (which in this case is 395). 9) Press "Alt" + "Tab" together to minimize the screen. 10) Enter the new number that you wrote down (in this case, 395) into the Cheat-O-Matic box and click on "Search". 11) Repeat steps 7, 8, 9, and 10, each time entering the new different amount of gold, i.e. 395, 390, 385, etc... until the Cheat-O-Matic program gives you a code (which usually takes about 3 tries). Once you have the code (which in this case is xC2B96C:62A), you can change the amount of Gold you have to almost any number! You will usually have to pause and unpause the game before you will see the new amount of Gold that you entered. Also, it's a good idea to save the game with your extra amount of Gold, that way, you don't have to use the Cheat-O-Matic program again to get your Extra Gold back. And remember, you can use this method to increase many other things besides gold, like HP, MP, lives, ammo, etc... I hope that this helps out. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
