To Be A Man

He stands on the threshold
Of the rest of his life,
Remembering all he's been told.
But could he take a life?

All along they had said,
"Be a man,"
Dad, Uncle Joe, the books he'd read.
Now he's not sure he can.

He fingers the gun in his hand,
Tears pushing behind his eyes.
He fights them back, all this to be a man?
After all, real men don't cry!

He opens the door,
Hears her scream
His name as she falls to the floor.
It hits him like a bad dream.

There is another voice then, He looks up in a daze.
It is another man!
This makes him completely crazed!

He pulls the trigger once more,
He is now truly a man,
As one more body falls to the floor.
Now he must make his stand.

Red lights pulse, the blood dries,
As her hourglass runs out of sand.
To the officers questions he softly replies,
"At least I'm still a man."
