RELIGION: Lutheran

3. Caroline Wilhelmine Albrecht

RELIGION: Lutheran
BIOGRAPHY: Caroline immigrated to the United States in 1891 with her husband Leopold Gruling and their son Robert. Her daughter Maria and her husband Ernest Pruss were already in America. They came over on the ship Oldenburg, which brought them to New York, and from there they went to Chicago. In Chicago, their son Robert got a job in a glue factory. They worked and saved their money for 3 years until they could afford to go to Wausau, WI. In Wausau they met a real estate agent who talked them into going to see farms in South Dakota, and even paid for their train tickets. However, when they got there, they didn't like what they saw, but the real estate agent was so mad, he wouldn't pay for their return tickets, so they bought their own tickets back to Hamburg, WI where their daughter and her family lived. Then they bought 80 acres of woodland for $500, built a log house, cleared the land, and began farming (mainly potatoes at first).
