As a kid growing up in South Dakota, the farmhouse her parents were renting was destroyed by a tornado. After that, in the spring of 1945, the family migrated to Oregon. She joined the U.S. Air Force after high school, which is where she met her husband, a career military officer. Shirley herself served three years in the Air Force.
