Introduction

One of my favorite passtimes while indoors and not pursuing some new adventure is reading Western American history. I have been a history lover for as long as I can remember and and the days of the Old West has always been my favorite area of American history. In fact, at one time I operated a small mail order business selling books on Western history. On this page I have culled from my experience in that business to produce a comprehensive list of books on the Old West complete with links to their descriptions and info on their publishers. I hope you enjoy browsing this section of my website.!

Indian Wars:

The Arikara Narrative of Custer's Campaign
and the Battle of Little Bighorn

Edited by Orin G. Libby
Foreword by Jerome A. Greene
Preface by Dee Brown
Introduction by D'Arcy McNickle

General George Armstrong Custer's defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn is well known through U.S. military sources and Lakota and Cheyenne narratives, but little has been heard from the Indians who fought beside Custer - the Arikara scouts. Now their eyewitness reports on Custer's campaigns from 1874 through 1876 are told in The Arikara Narrative of Custer's Campaign and the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Western History:

Stories of the Old West Tales of the Mining Camp,
Cavalry Troop, and Cattle Ranch

Edited by John Seelye

This collection of stories portrays an Old West that is both fact and fiction. The fifty narratives are written by some of America's finest writers, including Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Jack London, Mary Austin, Ambrose Bierce, Owen Wister, Frederic Remington, Stephen Crane, Frank Norris, O. Henry, and Stewart Edward White.

The reader will delight in comic tales about California charlatans, prostitutes with hearts of gold, tough, taciturn, and honorable cowboys, and heroic cavalrymen. There are razor-sharp stories of settlers struggling to survive in an unforgiving and unknown land and accounts with a rare understanding of the cultures of the American Indian.
512 pages, 5 ½ x 8 ½.
