Point of View:

the way an author tells a story

1st Person: uses 1st person pronouns such as I, we, me, us

• is usually the protagonist

• is always a character in the story

3rd Person Limited: uses 3rd person pronouns such as he, she, they

• is always a character in the story

• is "limited" to one character's thoughts and actions.

• Follows the limited character throughout the story

3rd Person Omniscient: uses 3rd person pronouns

• is never a character in the story is not limited to any one character-knows the thoughts and actions of each separate character

unreliable narrator: a narrator who cannot be trusted to tell the truth.

Symbol:

• a person, place, or object that represents a broader idea

• Examples would include the American flag representing America, its people, and the fifty states, but also the idea of liberty, justice, free speech, etc.
