Chapter Six

Cameron watched as his sister walked slowly down the aisle. She was such a wonderful sister and friend. Sure they fought, but few siblings were as close as they were. And now she was getting married. She made a beautiful bride and he could only think of one other person more beautiful, and she had just walked down the aisle on his arm. He glanced past the groom, best man, and priest. Lexa looked beautiful in a silk, emerald green dress that matched her eyes perfectly. God was good. He stopped at the thought. God really was good to him. He had given him two wonderful parents, a great sister, and a lovely assistant who would hopefully someday be more. Lexa had said a few weeks back that she felt God had called her back to San Antonio for a reason. At the time, the comment had bemused him, but all of the sudden the meaning became clear. God had been working in his life, even though Cameron had not asked for the help. He thought about it. Trusting God to do what he was already doing couldn’t be that hard. He turned to watch as the ceremony began. Lexa would be pleased with the decision.

Lexa sighed contentedly. The wedding had been beautiful and the reception fun. She’d learned that Cam was an awesome two-stepper. Cam glanced over at her as he drove her home.

“Have fun?”

“Definitely. You?”

“A blast.”

There was a comfortable silence.

“Lexi?”

Lexa looked over at Cameron.

“Yes Cam?” Their relationship had grown by leaps and bounds in the past month. Lexa now realized that she loved Cam, but was afraid to say so. She didn’t want his decision to trust God to stem from the fact that the only way to further the relationship was for him to believe. No matter how much she wanted him to, she couldn’t force him to make this decision.

“I realized something today at the wedding. I’ve been stupid. I’ve wasted all this time deliberating on whether to trust God or not, when he’s been in control of my life from the start. Without him, I wouldn’t have this wonderful family, a good business, or--” he looked over at her tenderly, “you.”

Lexa felt hope burgeoning but she had to be sure. “So what are you saying?” she asked hesitantly.

“I’m saying that for as smart as my teachers always said I was, I’ve been amazingly dumb. God is in control of my life and I’m okay with that. I trust him,” answered her.

Lexa let go of the breath she hadn’t known she was holding. “You really mean it?”

Cam stopped the car in front of Lexa’s apartment building.

“With my whole heart,” he said with a soft smile.

Lexa threw him a huge grin before throwing her arms around him and whispering, praying really, “Thank you Lord!” She pulled away from him, her face radiant.

“The Lord certainly works in mysterious ways,” Lexa stated with a chuckle.

“That he does, Lexi my love. That he does.”

They stared at each other with ridiculous grins on their faces for a few minutes. Cameron finally sighed.

“I’d better let you go up and get some sleep. I’ll pick you up for church tomorrow.”

“You’d better! Cam,” Lexa reached up and touched his cheek. “I love you,” she finally whispered.

Cameron leaned over and kissed her lightly on the lips.

“I love you too Lexi. Good night.”

“‘Night. Sleep sweet.” She smiled at him, love and joy in her eyes.

“You too sweetheart.” He gave her a final kiss before walking her to the door.

Seven months later

Cam smiled as he watched the most beautiful woman walk down the aisle. The last seven months had been wonderful and he expected things to only get better. He was under no illusions though. He knew there would be trials, but with God’s grace and guidance they would make it through.

Cam looked into the emerald eyes of his soon-to-be wife and thanked God yet again for everything He had seen fit to give him. He took Lexa’s hand from Colin’s and led her to the priest.

“Dearly beloved, we gather here…”

God’s grace really was sufficient.
