Not-So-Prestigious Awards

This article was written by Kevin Sullivan in July 2000 for wwf.com.
The parts regarding Christian are in bold and italics.)

Six months of the year 2000 have already passed, which means that you only have to wait six more months for those prestigious year-end awards. Or, as luck would have it, you don't have to wait any longer for the not-so-prestigious Kevin Sullivan Half-Year Awards. Unfortunately, the Kevin Sullivan Half-Year Awards is not looked upon as one of the bigger award presentations in the industry. However, it is still in its baby stages. Give it a few more years and the Kevin Sullivan Half-Year Awards will be circled on everybody's calendar. Can't you see Billy Crystal ditching his other obligations to host this award show? OK, maybe not.

Newcomer of the Half-Year
Finalists: Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Kurt Angle
And the Newcomer of the Half-Year award goes to: Kurt Angle

Since entering the WWF, Kurt Angle and the term sports-entertainment seem to have been synonymous. His early Federation achievements speak volumes for what type of an athlete this guy is, while his entertaining vignettes and promos further solidify his role within the company.

Comeback of the Half-Year
Finalists: Undertaker, Steve Austin, Paul Bearer
And the Comeback of the Half-Year award goes to: Undertaker

Paul looks great. He lost a ton of weight and appears to be as healthy as ever. But his return doesn't quite have the same impact of the Undertaker's. Not only did Taker come back kicking ass, but he came back as the American Bad Ass, as well. He hasn't been back for long, but he has already managed to shake up the WWF Championship scene.

Hottie of the Half-Year
Finalists: Terri, Lita, Trish
And the Hottie of the Half-Year award goes to: Trish

And let's face it,, chances are she's going to be a hottie for the entire year, right?

Pay-Per-View of the Half-Year
Finalists: King of the Ring, WrestleMania, Backlash
And the Pay-Per-View of the Half-Year award goes to: King of the Ring

Anytime Kurt Angle and The Rock go over on the same Pay-Per-View is OK with me. In addition, the Angle-Jericho match was great, as was the Angle-Rikishi match. Everybody and their mother was happy to see The Rock capture the Championship again. And who doesn't like to see Trish come to the ring multiple times in one night?

Match of the Half-Year
Finalists: WrestleMania: Ladder Match, Royal Rumble: Cactus vs. Triple H, SmackDown!: Rikishi vs. Triple H
And the Match of the Half-Year award goes to: WrestleMania Ladder Match

Over the years, fans of the World Wrestling Federation have seen many memorable ladder matches. However, in my opinion, there has never been a ladder match like the one put on at this year's WrestleMania. All three teams - Dudley Boyz, Hardys and Edge and Christian - executed never-seen-before maneuvers, highlighted by a Jeff Hardy senton bomb off of an over-sized ladder. I'm guessing we will never see another ladder match like this one. That is, unless these three teams decide to put life and limb on the line one more time.

Vignettes of the Half-Year
Finalists: APA
And the Vignettes of the Half-Year award goes to: Who do you think? APA, of course.

Nobody else was nominated in this category for the simple reason that nobody else is in the same class as Faarooq and Bradshaw. These two superstars really found their niche when they started boozing and gambling on TV. Their "'cause we need beer money" vignettes are absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately, not every vignette that was shot made their way onto TV. However, take my word for it, they were laugh out loud funny.

Tag Team of the Half-Year
Finalists: Too Cool, Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian
And the Tag Team of the Half-Year award goes to: Edge and Christian

It's no secret that the crack staff of WWF.com is huge fans of Too Cool. However, just like baseball in 1997, the best team can't always win (the Yankees came up short in their World Series efforts). Anyway, Edge and Christian are multiple-time Tag Team Champions and are getting more and more entertaining by the week. Personally, I can't wait to see how far these guys get by the end of the year.

MVP
Finalists: The Rock, Triple H, Chris Jericho
And the MVP of the Half-Year award goes to: Triple H

To me, this one was a no-brainer. As much as I enjoy watching and listening to both The Rock and Chris Jericho, neither superstar has dominated the mat wars like Triple H has over the past six months. Triple H is undoubtedly the MVP of the half-year.

There you have it, the 2000 Kevin Sullivan Half-Year Awards. Again, in, this not-so-prestigious award ceremony is still in its baby stages. While this year's ceremony did not have much hype surrounding it' next year's is already shaping up to be a ratings blockbuster. Look out sliced bread, this is going to be huge.
