On the night one year ends
And a new one begins,
It is a time for renewal.
People put aside old problems,
Mistakes of the past are forgotten,
And they make promises they intend to keep
During the year to come.
Many of these promises
Do not last more than a week,
But some of them are kept the entire year.
These promises make a difference
Not only to the people who made them,
But to the world as a whole.
As the world gets weighted down
With fear, anger, and disappointment.
Time is needed to renew hopes, dreams, and ambitions.
Just like January is part of the year,
Renewal is part of the cycle of life.
