For centuries gold has been treasured.
It is still considered the world standard of wealth.
This valuable substance is carefully measured.
At the risk of jobs, food, shelter, and health
Many people go elsewhere to mine for gold.
They chase the faintest chance of prosperity.
More often than not, the trial grows cold.
Despite the miner's sincerity.
Because of numerous gold disputes,
It has been used to symbolize greed.
One who gives the miner salutes
May be offering a crooked deed.
Mining takes skill, hard work, and luck.
Otherwise one could get stuck.
