I'm sure you've all done it at one time or another, sat with 6 cans LCL pils or whatever , listening to an away gamme on the radio. Well here is a guide to various beers & lagers....besides if we make Europe the continetal section should come in handy...hmmm

This reminds me of the old days. It's a Sincliar Spectrum emulator site (80's computer system replicator), complete with games such as Match Day & Football Manager (remember those). Concise A-Z of Football Terms...sort of...in no particular order & with a 15 certificate! Please don't read if easily offended.

Early Doors

The early part of a football match, and a comment much-used by the likes of Ron Atkinson and other, equally banal and lost-for-real-words sages of
punditry.  And Glenn Hoddle.  "If we can close them down early doors..." is typical of such usage of the term.  Managers of teams who haven't a hope in hell of winning a match will often reach for this one in pre-game
interviews.  Also to "grab an early goal early doors".

The Back Stick

What was once called The Far Post - "stick" being, one presumes a more
acceptable term for a lump of wood.  Again, much-used by the aforementioned Big Ron.  Example: "If he can hit The Big Lad on The Back Stick..."

The Big Lad

The player - there is, invariably, one in each team - who is recognisable
only for his size, the usual implication being that he's fuck all good for
anything else but sending up for corners where he can damage opposing
players.  Or putting on The Back Stick where he can often be hit with A Wild Ball and have it ricochet into The Onion Bag.  Either that or he can be wedged in his own goal at opposition corners in the vague hope that he can stop A Certain Goal.

The Onion Bag

Imaginative term for the nets.  Bet that took a lot of thought.  It's
because onions used to be sold in net bags.  Unless you live in France, in
which case they are sold across the handle bars of bikes by Smelly Bastards In Stripey Shirts.

A Certain Goal

The words heard by commentators and fans alike immediately before Andy Cole pings the fucking ball into Row Z.

A Full-Blooded Challenge

Often committed by The Big Lad in a pathetic attempt to get the ball.  (See also Hospital Tackle.)

A Helping Hand Across The Back

What you get if you go to the pictures with Gerald Sinstadt.  The dirty
twat.  Allegedly.

A Playmaker

A midfield player who cannot pass, tackle, shoot or do fuck all else.  In
other words, a complete spastic who is so inept as to be denied the
opportunity of playing anywhere else on the fucking pitch.  (See Jamie
Redknapp.)

Hospital Pass

Device favoured by The Big Lad and other useless bastards in an attempt to
keep their goalkeepers on their toes, whereby a short pass is made to the
big dumb fucker who stands doing fuck all else in front of The Onion Bag to see if he can run.  Much-used by Jamie Carragher, Steve Bould and that cunt who used to play for Chelsea and now fucks Leicester up every week.

What teams have who are shit.

Too Good To Go Down

A well-worn phrase often heard when a former decent team is now crap and
rooted to the bottom of the league with Easter coming up.  Like ten points
on the board and with people still saying they are "Too Good To Go Down".
Also heard at gay cinemas frequented by Gerald Sinstadt, and at the court
hearing of Gillian Taylforth.

Nil-Nil Written All Over It

What you say a game has, just as you get up to switch over the telly with
twenty minutes to go...then you find out on the news that it was 7-8 and
three players got sent off and a parachutist landed on the ref and killed
him and eight nude virgins streaked across the bastard pitch with fucking
great big tits.  Like her at Twickenham years ago.  Bastard!

A Loyal Servant

Similar to The Big Lad only worse.  A Loyal Servant because your team has
never quite been able to off-load the superfluous cunt.  (See also
Suck-holing Bastard and Phil Neal.)

Our Place

Your team's home ground.  As in "They've still got to come to our place
yet."  This is used when you are playing in Europe and have just been
stuffed five-fucking-nil by a bunch of whale-clubbing inbreds from
Scandinavia.  Believed to have first originated because chairmen were
desperate to flog seats to any cunt in the vain hope of grabbing back a bit
of cash from a lost cause.

A Good Left Peg

Descriptive term for the left leg of a one-footed player, implying that he
is of some use when, clearly, he's fit only for the Sunday Leagues.  Like
Ryan fucking Giggs.  Strangely, a player with a good right foot is never
similarly blessed with the appropriate epithet.  One never hears a
commentator say that a player has "A Good Right Peg".  That's because we
right-handed people are not utter fucking spazzes like they are.  Freaks.
Burn the bastards as witches, that's what I say.  When I was at school they
twatted the back of your hand if they caught you writing with it.  Aye, and
they were fucking spot on an' all...

A Dig

A shot from a great distance, the preferred technique of endeavouring to
score a goal of such as A Good Team Player, A Playmaker and Jamie fucking
Redknapp.  The end result is more often than not a Row Z job of grandiose
proportions.  I mean...like Alan Wright's ever gonna score a bastard goal.
I don't think!

An Unfashionable Club

A bunch of fucking wank who will almost certainly be relegated by Christmas,
if not sooner.  However, such sides possess the uncanny, almost metaphysical
ability to Turn Over sides who are much bigger, more fashionable and
supposedly better than they are.

Turn Over

What fucking shite wank teams do to you just a game into the cunting season
when you thought everything was going okay.  Fuckers!  But they never do it
at Old Trafford, do they?  Oh, no... that wouldn't fucking do.  I hope they
go bust and the stand collapses.

A Decent Job

As in: "He can still do A Decent Job for us." Something that managers say to
bemused fans when the buying of some bald-headed old fart of forty-plus is
announced.  A Decent Job will invariably involve many, if not all, of the
following: scoring on your debut and then getting injured for the next six
months; bringing on The Kids with Valuable Experience; being groomed for
future management on the cheap because the chairman is about to kick the
manager out on his arse; making the odd appearance in thirty-five and then
fucking off to sell bog roll and then flog your medals in the hope of
garnering a bit of divorce settlement money cos the wife's Had It Away With
The Centre Forward.

Had It Away With The Centre Forward

What Dave Watson's wife did when he was at Man City - the centre forward
being one Dennis Tueart, who was so shit-scared of what would happen to him
that he pissed off to The States to play for Cincinnati Shit-Kicking Useless
Fucking Bastards.

The Kids

The ginger-headed little wankers with squeaky voices whom a beleaguered
manager will play because his highly-paid professionals have just been
knocked out of the last cup of the season and are 17th in the league.  There
is always one called Jason and another who was famous as a kid for playing
keep-up on some kids' Tv programme.  And a drug addict what's queer.

Valuable Experience

What shit, recovering alcoholic players who can still do A Decent Job are
said to bring to a club.  But we all know what a load of twat that is.
Steve Bould...Hahaha.

A Little Harsh

Commentator-speak for the punishment meted out when a Manchester United
player does anything remotely illegal within the game.  Bookings for
leg-breaking tackles, red cards for pissing on the ref, etc.  Even a
six-month ban for leaping into the crowd to kick some fan's head in is
deemed "A Little Harsh" where The Scum are concerned.  Conversely, the term
is also employed when a penalty is awarded against The Scum, though it is
seldom heard these days.

Knocking On The Door

This term has a couple of uses.  When a manager or player says: "We've been
Knocking On The Door now for a couple of seasons" what he is trying to say
is that his side has, for a couple of seasons, been close to winning some
major trophy or other.  What he is actually saying is: "We'll never win fuck
all, us. We're shite.  But I am good, honest.  Please don't sack me cos
there's fuck all else I can do with my life apart from do breakfast cereal
ads and after-dinner speeches where folk only go for the free ale anyway."
Or a player can be said to be Knocking On The Door when he is showing
promise, about to break into the first team - though he'll probably play a
dozen games before going to Chester on loan, then being dumped into the
Conference where he can brag about who he's played against and how his
famous former-manager shit all over him.

A Future England Captain

What it is believed that players who are Knocking On The Door will
eventually become.  Once they have learned the ins and outs of the game and
become more experienced blah blah blah.  However, such players must beware -
such expectations are generally a hex upon his career.  A Future England
Captain means that a player is good now but see once he's been booted
arse-over-tit around every pitch in the premier by The Big Lad, The
Playmaker and Jamie Carragher, had his share of Hospital Tackles and
Full-Blooded Challenges, all he'll be fit for in a few years is Halifax
Town.  Like Russell Beardsmore.

The letter imaginatively appended to a footballer's name in order to create
an original and highly-amusing nickname.  For example: "I played the ball
out to Wrighty who put Marshy through who laid it out wide to Jonesy..." All
very inventive.  The only known case of a player not having this method
applied to his surname is the England and Newcastle United skipper, Alan
Shearer, whose nickname within the game and among his teammates is simply
"That Cunt".
