Hailed as the "first paperback ever published", this tale of a wondrous world beyond the horizon has been a classic since it was first published in the early 30's.  This is the story of Conway, a British consul who has never felt quite right since he fought in the first World War.  When he and three others are kidnapped in their plane during an evacuation due to revolution, he finds a place where he does feel right.  Beyond the forbidding mountains lies a place called Shangri-La, where monks keep a secret.  Stranded in this beautiful and luxurious city, the four find a part of themselves in this world.

Conway, for his part, feels as if "he did not know whether he had been mad and was not sane, or had been sane for a time and was now mad again."

Either way, there is still the matter of leaving to be dealt with.  Do they want to leave, or should they stay?  In the dramatic conclusion of this novel, the reader finds out.

*Made into a movie before the book was released, starring Ronald Colman.
