Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine is an excellent retelling of a classic fairy tale. The story of Cinderella is given new life by the heroine, Ella. Her father, though not dead, is a merchant who is rarely home and certainly not the saint he is portrayed as in the fairy tale. She is cursed with a spell put on her as a baby. She must always obey any command given to her, by anyone. Of course, this must be a secret, but her evil stepsister's discover it, quite by accident. And of course, there is the Prince Charmont, who's nickname is Char. She meets him at her mother's funeral, and becomes good friends. Their friendship comes to terms when her sisters meddle in their relationship. Whether she breaks free of the spell that has held her for so long is the twist to the classic. A children's story, it is captivating for older kids.
