Alas, Babylon

Main Book Review Page

Pat Frank

This horrifying post-apocalyptic novel tells the story of a small town held together by a select few who knew of the impending disaster brought on by the Cold War and it's threatening nuclear possibilities.  Alas, Babylon was first published in 1959, at the height of the nuclear holocaust fears, and delivered a frightening look at what might come.  Though the events are certainly startling in their truthfulness, the reader is captivated by the ingenuity that fills the inhabitants of this small town, Fort Repose.  It is certainly a novel that everyone should experience. This unforgettable novel reminds and warns all of those alive now and forever of the indeterminable harm caused by these weapons used as pawns.  And from the King James Bible, in the book of Revelation, comes the title:

Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour thy judgment is come.
