Cricket Frogs

Acris

Like so many sounds of the wilderness, the mating call of a male cricket frog says different things to different people. To some it echoes the melodious chirp of a cricket; to others, the clacking together of stones or pieces of metal. The calls are commonly heard around ponds and lakes from spring through midsummer and sometimes even later in the southern part of the range. After mating, the female lays 200 or more eggs, singly rather than in clumps like most frogs. By autumn the tadpoles have transformed into froglets. Cricket frogs live in plant cover along the water's edge and are active at night as well as during the day. They jump into the water quickly if disturbed, turn while swimming underwater, and come back to shore at some other point. The Cricket Frog Found In Southeast Georgia is The Southern Cricket Frog.
