Interjections
The interjection is a cry of passion which stands completely outside of the syntax of the sentence: it is in no way related to the grammar of the rest of sentence. Some do not even classify the interjection as a part of speech.
COMMON INTERJECTIONS
- 1. Surprise:
- en (behold), ecce (lo), o (oh), em (take that), ehem, papae, vah;
- 2. Joy:
- io, evoe, evae, euhoe;
- 3. Sorrow and Pain:
- heu (alas), eheu (oh, alas), vae (woe), pro (oh), ei (oh), hei (oh);
- 4. Calling:
- heus (hey), eho (look here), ehodum, st;
- 5. Praise:
- eia, heia, euge, eugepae (whoopee).
- Interjections can be related, slightly, to the rest of the sentence by means of a dative of a reference.
Vae victis. Woe to the conquered!
Heu ei. Alas for him!
