"The Keep"

C.J. Ingerson
1/21/99

Verse 1
********

Eyes watching the play alone
for the 'keep' is a lonely place
from time to time without a phone
then it is like the middle of a race.

Verse 2
********

Each game is decided by the keep
or so they say that is who to blame
for letting a little checkered ball sneak
past him into the net, such a shame.

Verse 3
********

Here stands the player who watches
shouts encouragement to the mates
who shout and moan to the blotches;
the 'keep' is soccer player that relates.

Verse 4
********

So alone stands this mighty player
on the field of play in deepest green
who each game can be a giant slayer
or leave the game as the player unseen.

Verse 5
********

Tis the fun to run around and kick the ball
to fall down and laugh and play the game
but to be the keep is none of these at all
for the 'keep' it just is not at all the same.

Verse 6
********

When the game has ended and all are gone
usually alone is this solitary figure of desire
leaping right - left, humming a small song
the theme from the movie "Chariots of fire."

Verse 7
*******

For to the 'keep' soccer is not just a game
it is a test of will to concentrate to then be
what others often strive for but no shame
the greatest of all time; for all others to see.
