"I Found it Along the Way"

C.J. Ingerson
11/16/98

Verse 1
********

"It was twisted . . .

covered with weeds
barely visible to the eye
but I saw it just there
by the side of the road,
so I stopped to look
at it closer just now.
I wasn't sure at first
what it was I saw
but slowly carefully
I pulled away the weeds
and then the dirt
and other trash
which had accumulated
by the side of the road
as I struggled to see
what is was I found.

Verse 2
********

Now at first it wasn't much
a small stem twisted
and turned for what
little sunlight it could
find along with rain,
a little bud here, there
a couple leaf's for color
by the side of the road
trying to stay alive
to give beauty to this spot.

Verse 3
********

So I spent a little more time
and dug the dirt around it
placed some rocks
in a circle to protect
this little flower trying
so hard to survive
against all nature's odds
by the side of the road
littered with trash, weeds
and no proper place to be.

Verse 4
********

Once I was done this day
I noticed others had stopped
to watch and comment too
they asked if they could help
and offered each in turn
to pick a day to stop
clean the trash and weed
by the side of the road
this little flower now
no longer to fight against
nature all alone.

Verse 5
*********

So what had I found
when noticing this flower
twisted and dirty alone
was something more
important than I had
reason to believe
for beauty was found
by the side of the road
and thus I learned in man
too can beauty be found.

Verse 6
********

If we but take the time
to prune, to weed, to dig
to protect, to instruct,
to allow others their turn
we can find a sister
or a brother who is lost
feeling twisted and alone
by the side of the road
all we need do is stop
and lend a helping hand. . ."
