french band - music for a modern world

new - updated links at the bottom of this page.

can you help me? i'm looking for anyone who's seen air live who would be willing to spend a few minutes writing up a review. if you can help, and it would be greatly appreciated, please mail me (em) at

air's 'premiers symptomes' is now available throughout the world. it is a fantastc album, though many people i know find 'moon safari' more accessible. track 1, 'modular mix' is superbly crafted and i recommend this album highly, especially as it is only $15 australian. for adelaidians, try the muses, big star or b#.

air have recorded a 13 song soundtrack for Sophia Copolla's debut film 'the virgin suicides'. the film has just closed (nov) here in adelaide and the soundtrack is widely available. the beautifully sung single, 'playground love', received a fair amount of airplay here thanks to triple j.

air have provided a music base for two commercials with their track 'la femme d'argent' from 'moon safari'. one is for qualcomm and one, currently showing on australian television screens, is for loreal 'visible lift' make-up, i do believe.

air is everywhere! recently i found 'modular mix' on an in-flight radio station as well as backing an interview on the abc's 10:30 slot. it was not so good to find 'moon safari' filed in 'dance' alongside the vengaboys... the offending record store shall remain unnamed!

air are a french band whose music doesn't easily fit into any category. they are often described as ambient or nebulous and their album, moon safari, has been hailed as the lounge music for the 21st century. air have been highly praised in such magazines as 'the face' and 'rolling stone' (australian edition). 'moon safair' was hailed as one of the greatest releases of 1998.

air's single 'sexy boy' recieved much radio airplay, as did their fantastic single 'kelly watch the stars'. 'all i need' with beautiful vocals from american singer beth hirsch became somewhat of a classic among the fans and got quite a respectable amount of airplay for a while but the popular market was screaming for something new. long ago i suggested this 'may come with the re-release of 'premiers symptomes' and i was completely wrong. air have remained an intangeable force in music - never cracking the popular market but somehow slowly becoming known outside a group of loyal and faithful fans. even better, it is not publicity that is responsible for this - it is their music, pure and simple and with the talent that these boys display i'm sure they will keep us interested for a long time to come.

air themselves are a two piece consisting of two 30 yr old divine gentlemen called jean-benoit dunckel and nicolas godin. they live in paris, near the famous palace of versailles. of their album 'moon safari', j-b says 'air's music is searching more in a harmony way than a rhythm way - we think only in terms of feeling the keyboards and finding good chords.' he believes air are 'pure musicians', unlike dj's with whom j-b sees nothing in common. bit pretentious really, but i suppose he can afford to be.

air have been recognised by such international artists as beck, who made a recording of one of air's songs and sean lennon who appeared on their european tour. in france and england they are apparently well known.

>>it's a real shame that hardly anyone in australia has heard of them. wake up, aus!<< this again is something i wrote a while back. it seems now that air are well recognised and also appreciated. 'moon safari' has appeared in a number of record collections of people who i would not have immediately expected to have bought this album. it hasn't quite been a revolution, but air's music retains its many fans for the simple fact that is it good and it is beautiful. we love it.
