Variable's Opinion on Drug Reform

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you know about the Drug War being waged in this country. The media is filled with it, hollywood producers are making money off of it, gangsters and politicians are making money off of it. The only people who are suffering, are the ordinary people in America who choose to practice their right to democracy and freedom, to do what they will with their own life. The American government treats its people like sheep, as if they do not have the capability or the right to run their own lives. This philosophy debases the vary premise that this nation was founded on. And it is insulting to every tax-paying consenting adult in this country. This is not to say that drugs do not cause harmful effects, depending on the substance in question. I am merely supporting a platform of legalization of marijuana (which is an herb not a drug), psychedelics(forget all you learned in high-school), and the decriminalization of the more addictive and destructive substances such as cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin. Jail has never improved anything about a person, it has only made them more violent and bitter, and it a virtual College of Crime. Besides, the majority of the people who fall victim to these POW camps of the drug war are not the money hungry, dangerous and murderous drug lords that who should be suffering this fate, but the otherwise law abiding(mostly marijuana only using) middle class of America. We should be focusing on treatment for those with addiction problems, and discovering the many uses(medical, recreational, industrial) uses of marijuana. The problem equates like this. Recent studies have shown that every dollar that the government spends on treatment is equal in effectiveness to every seven dollars that the government spends on jailing. Dont you think its about time we pursued a plan of action that made sense. Prohibition in the 1920's should have taught us something. Lets not let the greedy Al Capone's of today profit off of our ignorance. Lets lend our brethren a helping hand, not kick them to the dust!
