WWF Smackdown Report – December 23, 1999
Hosted by Michael Cole and Jerry “the King” Lawler
Taped from Dallas, TX
The show opened with a backstage segment where Mankind was in front of a podium, speaking to the wrestlers. Mankind tried to convince wrestlers that the "Helmsley-McMahon era" wasn't worth it, pointing out things that have happened to several wrestlers as a result of it. The wrestlers liked the top rope topless match. All in unison said, "We aren't going to take it anymore." Stephanie McMahon walked in with a mean look on her face. She said it was her company and she needed to explain a certain issue. She said her biggest mistake was taking on HHH. She said it was her era, not Triple H's, and it was all about business. She announced that Test would take on Road Dogg, The Rock would take on Al Snow in a steel cage match, and Mankind would receive a WWF Title shot against The Big Show. In the latter match, Triple H would be suspended 15 feet above the ring in a cage, so he would not interfere. She said that Edge, Christian, Test, and Jeff Hardy would have roles in a match between the winner and HHH.
Chris Jericho defeated Hardcore Holly (w/Crash Holly) by DQ.
-Holly was in the match because of his win on Nitro. Before the match, Jericho cut a promo on Holly, calling him Bob Holly, saying everyone should have a holly, jolly Christmas. He said Holly would receive a beating from the Ayatollah of Rock 'n' Rolla. In the match, Holly had the advantage, until Jericho came back after catching Holly with a boot to the face. Jericho nailed Crash with a baseball slide and then strapped Hardcore in the Walls of Jericho. Crash ran-in and nailed Jericho with the belt for the DQ. Chyna entered the ring to destroy Crash, while Jericho took out Hardcore.
Backstage, the Outlaws consulted HHH about his spot in a small steel cage during the main event. They said he should be the one getting the title shot, since he is married to Stephanie. Triple H said it's not about marriage, it's about business. He said he would think of something.
Backstage, Stephanie McMahon asked Kane to protect her from D-Generation X. She promised Kane he could get his hands on any DX member on Monday, and encouraged him even more by picturing what X-Pac and Tori were doing together for the holidays. Kane agrees to be her bodyguard.
Rikishi Phatu defeated Viscera
-The orange and black logo appeared as Rikishi made his entrance. Both he and Viscera immediately brawled outside. Viscera hit his Big Splash, but let the referee only count to one. He went for another, but missed. Rikishi then attempted a powerslam, but was unsuccessful. After kicking out of Viscera's pin attempt, he nailed Viscera with a superkick, and followed up with the Banzai from the second rope for the victory. Afterwards, Too Cool made their ways out. Scotty Too Hotty was wearing a Santa Clause hat, with his hair sticking out of it. He and Grand Master Sexy convinced Rikishi to dance to the crowd's enjoyment.
Test told Stephanie that he wasn’t buying what she was doing.
Backstage, Jonathan Coachman interviewed The Rock. The Rock immediately held up his finger to tell Coachman to shut up. The crowd was immediately chanting, "Rocky." He let us know he had finally came back to Dallas. He talked about great days of the Millenium. He brought up that Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity, Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, and the day The Rock raised the People's Eyebrow. He said he was the People's Champ. He said some of the worst days. He brought up "the dreaded night when Mrs. Snow gave birth to Al Snow." He said it took "three jabronies" to beat him the previous Monday on Raw, but we were now on Smackdown, The Rock's show. He said he would lay the smackdown on Snow's candy–ass. He promised that we would see the People's Elbow. He wished Snow, calling him a jabroni, a Merry Christmas. He finished off with "If you smell ..." (you know the rest).
Test defeated Road Dogg.
-Test used a protective mask. RD worked on the nose for his advantage. HHH and Billy Gunn looked on backstage. Test later hit RD with the mask. He followed up with the pumphandle powerslam and Elbow Drop for the victory. Afterwards, Test wanted more. He went for a chair, but the referee took it away. He beat on RD up the rampway, until he was held back by officials.
Backstage, Triple H told Billy Gunn he was going to confront Stephanie.
HHH, along with Gunn and Road Dogg, arrived in Stephanie's locker room. Stephanie held Kane back from attacking D-Generation X. She said she would hold her end of the bargain, as long as Kane held onto his. She promised Kane a match with Gunn later in the night. Triple H asked Stephanie if she really had to put him in a cage above the ring. He said he may have went too far before in their relationship, and definitely made mistakes. Stephanie said the sex was great, but business was business. She said it was the McMahon era now. Triple H said he wasn't leaving the locker room, at which point Stephanie brought police officers in to the room. She said they would ensure Triple H went back to his locker room, didn't leave the arena, and went to the cage he was to be locked in. The cops escorted an aggressive Triple H to his locker room.
Kurt Angle defeated Edge
-Angle told the crowd to hold his applause and said he loves coming to Texas, because of the fans intensity and integrity, but there was one thing Texans lacked: intelligence. He said if Texans worked hard enough on it, they could have intelligence. At one point during the match, Edge had a close count after a DDT. He went for the Spear, but Angle moved out of the way. Edge was sure not to bump into the referee, who was behind Angle. Angle kicked Edge, who, this time, bumped into the referee. At that point, Steve Blackman ran-in and nailed Edge with a kendo stick, although the shot could have been meant for Angle. Angle hit his Samoan drop-type finisher for another win in his "undefeated streak."
Backstage, Stephanie told Blackmun to stay out of Kurt Angle’s business; The Rock made his way toward the ring.
Backstage, Al Snow spoke with Stephanie McMahon. He said he should face the champion, The Big Show, but he had to take on The Rock again. He questioned why Mick Foley got the Heavyweight Title shot and not him. Stephanie first told Snow to lower his voice, and then said if Snow could beat The Rock later in the night, he would receive a title shot the following week on Raw. Snow then explained what he would do to The Rock. Stephanie said, "Go do that, Al."
Highlights of Raw were shown.
The Rock defeated Al Snow in a cage match
-You could win this match by pinfall, submission, or by exiting the cage. Both immediately brawled on the outside. Both went for chairshots, but missed. The chair was later in the cage along with The Rock and Snow. Snow was dragged down after his first attempt to exit the cage. He took the advantage by slamming The Rock's face into the cage a couple of times. There were a ton of "Rocky" chants. The Rock hit a swinging neckbreaker. Snow was unsuccessful once again on exiting the cage. Snow later chose to jump off the top turnbuckle with a double axe-handle, but The Rock caught him. Snow was DDT'd for a close two-count. The Rock attempted to exit, but Snow pulled him down, causing The Rock's legs to land between the ropes. Snow hit The Rock with a weak chairshot for another close two-count. Snow then had his best chance to exit the cage and was already on the other side. The Rock climbed to the top and dragged Snow back in by his hair. He then back-suplexed Snow off the top turnbuckle. Snow went for a dive on The Rock, using the chair as a lift, but The Rock caught up with a lariat. Low–blow on The Rock. The Rock came back by giving Snow a spinebuster on the chair. He followed up with the People's Elbow for the win.
Ivory was in the women’s locker room telling them that it was time to do something.
The Kat defeated Ivory
-Before the match, Ivory said Miss Kitty went too far at the Armageddon PPV. She said it was sports-entertainment, not adult-entertainment. She said she would be the one to establish a real women's division. She challenged Kitty to a Women's Title match, as long as it was in the ring. Kitty, along with Chyna, made her way out, dressed in a red and white Santa outfit. Kitty resisted going in the ring at first, but Chyna convinced her to do the match. Kitty told Ivory she would do the match, as long as there were no disqualifications, no countouts, etc. Ivory agreed. Kitty went to the outside. Chyna whispered in her ear. Chyna did the match for the Kat. She took Ivory down with a test of strength. She then nailed her with the Pedigree. The Kat then entered the ring and made the easy pinfall.
Backstage, The Posse told Kaientai how to beat Jeff Hardy and Christian. Joey Abs called them Chinese.
Christian and Jeff Hardy (w/Terri Runnels) defeated Kaientai (w/Mean Street Posse)
- A very good match, filled with several high risk moves. After the Impaler by Christian and the Flipping Senton Bomb by Hardy on Funaki, Hardy got the win. The Posse was disappointed in Kaientai. They walked off, at which point Taka and Funaki dropkicked them from behind and ran off.
Backstage, Jim Ross spoke with Mankind. JR told Mick to be careful of Stephanie. Mankind said he was keeping his eye out, but he was focused on winning the title.
Backstage, Kane made his way toward the ring.
Triple H, along with Road Dogg, told Billy Gunn to destroy Kane. After they left, Road Dogg said a prayer for Mr. Ass.
Kane defeated Billy Gunn
-Gunn got in little offense, but in a matter of a minute or two, Kane hit the Chokeslam for the win. Afterward, Kane set up Gunn for the Tombstone on the outside of the ring, but Gunn escaped, and rammed Kane into the ringpost. HHH and Road Dogg went to save Mr. Ass, but HHH was not allowed to leave. Both brawled through the crowd and into the back. Kane was met by a scared Road Dogg, who said he knew where Tori was. He said she was at the airport. Kane left.
Highlights of Raw were shown.
Mark Henry (w/Mae Young, The Fabulous Moolah) beat Buh Buh Ray Dudley (w/D–Von Dudley)
-Before the match, Henry tried to read a love poem to Young. Buh Buh Ray Dudley, along with D-Von, entered. Buh Buh told Henry to shut his mouth, calling him a big idiot. He said he was going to throw-up all over himself. He called Henry a big, dumb Olympic failure. He said Henry was a disgrace to his home state of Texas. He called Young an old, wrinkly woman that smells like a bed-pan in an old folks home. He then shot down the crowd, calling them white trash losers. He said the Dallas Cowboys suck.. Buh Buh was dominant for most of the match. At one point, Young tried to enter the ring, but Moolah held her back. D-Von went to the top to do a diving headbutt on Henry's groin, even though he wasn't involved in the match. Moolah and Young shook the ropes, causing D-Von to land on the turnbuckle. Buh Buh went to assist D-Von, but ended up getting a Big Splash from Henry. Henry made the pinfall. He celebrated with Young afterwards.
Backstage, Stephanie McMahon, along with the police officers, let Triple H know it was time to get inside the cage. The officers once again had to forcefully escort Triple H to the ring. Triple H said it wasn't funny. Stephanie responded by saying it wasn't supposed to be funny.
The Big Show fought Mankind to a No-Contest with HHH hanging above the ring in a cage.
-Stephanie led HHH and the police officers to the ring. Triple H was thrown and locked in the cage. The cage was locked with a chain. The role of Test, Edge, Christian, and Jeff Hardy in the match seemed to be that they would make sure there was no wrong-doing. Once The Big Show and Mankind entered, they both provoked HHH. The cage was lifted. Stephanie sat in on color commentary. Big Show and Mankind started off by brawling on the outside. Mankind went into the ringpost and took a chairshot. Big Show had a bearhug going, then followed up with a belly-to-belly suplex. He grabbed a staircase, which Mankind slammed back into his face with a chair. Mankind hit Big Show with a few chairshots, including one on the head that had to be executed from the top of the announcer's table. Mankind let the chair stay around Big Show's head. Big Show got out of a sleeper hold. Big Show signaled for the Chokeslam, but Mankind kicked in the groin and followed up with the double-arm DDT. Big Show kicked out on two. Mankind pulled Mr. Socko out and stuffed it in Big Show's mouth. Both men went over the top rope. The small cage Triple H was in was lowered down to the ring. Stephanie acted surprised. She entered the ring, at which point Test, Edge, Christian, and Jeff Hardy began to come back down the rampway. A load of wrestlers ran out and brawled with them to the back, so they were out of the picture. Big Show and Mankind brawled on the outside, while Stephanie tried to hold Triple H from getting out of the cage. HHH got the chain off the door and got out. Mankind went after him, but he (HHH) quickly grabbed Stephanie and put her in front of him. Stephanie kicked Mankind. HHH then knocked out the referee with the chain that had locked the cage and beat Mankind down with it. The New Age Outlaws entered to continue the assault on Mankind and Big Show. Stephanie acted emotional and upset. Mankind was slammed into the cage. Stephanie and HHH hugged and smiled, meaning everything was a set-up from the start. HHH said he and Stephanie had two words for everyone. The crowd said, "suck it." HHH said that wasn't it, as he and Stephanie wished everyone a Merry Christmas.
