"Why is it so dark?" Heather thought out loud. Turning her head she realized
that her eyes were open and she couldn't see a thing. Everything was dark.
"Oh god, OH GOD HELP ME!" Heather screamed into the night.
Afraid she would hurt herself he jumped down the steps and grabbed her
arms to stop them from hitting the ground. The instant he touched her she started
fighting him. Heather lunged for his throat, intending to kill.
“What the hell are you doing!” Reed yelled smacking her in the face trying
to calm her down. “It’s me Reed, don’t you recognize me. I’m trying to help
you.”>
Heather looked hard at the place where the voice was coming from but still she
couldn't see a thing. Reaching out she carefully felt around till she found
his face. "Reed?"
She could feel him nod hid head at her. A sob escaped her mouth. She felt
like she was going insane and she had finally found a life preserver.
"Heather what's wrong?" He stared hard into her eyes. They were endless
depths of silver. He could see nothing but despair shining through them.
Heather choked back a cry of despair, “I’ve noticed something everytime we
meet I hurt you. And the funniest thing is your just trying to help.” She
looked away. “I don’t know what I’m doing my whole world is screwed up. I
killed my stepfather. Did you..." She felt Reed nod his head. "What am I going
to do?"
Reed felt sorry for her. She was just a kid and already the world was
against her. He suddenly had a thought, "Heather can you see?"
Heather shook her head. "Not a bloody thing. I remember seeing someone
driving up on a motorcycle and I was going to run out and stop them...and I
slipped. So when I woke up I couldn't see anything." Heather paused and
thought of something strange. "Reed, after I...you know and I came up the stairs
everything started to get blurry. You don't think?"
Reed sat back on his heels and thought about what she was saying. "Did
someone kidnap you and bring you here?" Heather nodded to him. "I think you've
been drugged."
Heather jumped as Reed's cell phone rang.
"Hello?"
Silence
"Yeah I found her, well no things aren't okay."
More silence.
"I'm going to need your help. Give me about an hour and I'll call you back
with what you need to do. Tell her mom what ever you have to tell her."
Heather heard the phone beep as Reed turned it off.
Reed who looked a warrior ready to defend his queen if need be. Tall and
proud.
And Tina had to admit a body to die for. He was a good six feet and probably
didn’t have an ounce of fat on his body. His thick brown hair fell just below
his brow line only helping to bring out his lapis colored eyes. Yes he was
defiantly a God.
Then there was Heather, every inch of her screamed woman. She was a petite
five foot three, with long dark hair falling to her waist. Her face was well
defined with high cheekbones and a small petite nose. Her eyes had always had a
strange gray color to them. But that’s what made Heather so special her uniqueness,
and inner beauty that never seemed to fade even in the hardest of times.
“Okay we need to talk about this one more time to see that we have this
straight. “Heather?” Reed looked at her and saw her lift her face to his
voice.
“Okay good, now you are pretending to be blind for a school science project
and you fell and hurt yourself. But most importantly the last time you saw your
stepfather was this morning before school and that was the last time.”
“Reed what about you? You’re new in town and you know the how it goes. Always
suspect the new guy!”> Heather lowered head. She didn’t want to admit that she
was scared. She had a feeling about who was behind everything. And she was
going to fix it. Blind or not she had started this and she was going to fix
it.
Reed raised and eyebrow at Tina. She just gave him a blank look. Not wanting
to push the issue with Heather in the room he nodded at her. Watching Tina
walk out of the room he looked back at Heather.
“Reed?”
In and instant Reed was kneeling in front of her. “What is it?”
“Well…I’m…This is so awkward and I don’t know how to say this.” Heather
picked her words carefully. “I wanted to say I was sorry for…everything. Thinking
back on everything I realize now you were only trying to help. But the thought of
you knowing what I am and what I’m capable of…”
“No stop right there.” Shaking his head he put two fingers over her lips. “I
know, I don’t blame you for any of it. I should throw you over my knee right
now and beat you silly but I think we’re past that. Yes I know what you are
but do you know what I am? Now think about this very carefully.”
Heather sat back and thought he was nuts. What was he talking about? And
suddenly it hit her.
Reed watched the play of emotions run across her face. And he finally saw the
one he was looking for. Realization. “Figure it out? I’m just like you. But
the only difference is I was born this way.” Taking her hand he moved her
fingers over his elongated canines. A look of pure relief washed over her
face.
“I know.” Reed turned his face to look into her eyes. Shifting slightly he
kissed her lips.
“Oh my gosh! I am soooo sorry.” Tina stopped on the threshold of her bedroom.
She turned a bright crimson red.
“It’s okay Tina.” Reed grinned devilishly at her. “Why don’t you come here
and I can give you a big kiss to?”
“That’s okay. I’d rather kiss a snake.” Tina smiled sweetly. Walking up to
Heather and Reed so stuck her tongue out at him. “Heather I want you to drink
this. I know it’s probably going to taste really gross but it’s important that
you drink this.”
Tina put the cup carefully into her hands and watched as she finished every
last drop. “Okay good. Now I hate to say this but you are going to get really
sleepy real soon here. So I’m going to have Reed carry you into the adjoining
room.”
Heather nodded slightly and could instantly feel the tea taking affect. Her
head felt fuzzy and very heavy. As Reed picked her up and carried her to the
other room she could feel the world slipping away like sand in an hour glass.
Reed laid her in the bed carefully not wanting to wake her. Suddenly Heather
let out a very loud and unlady like snore. He started laughing, he couldn’t
help himself.
Covering his mouth he walked back into Tina’s room and shut the door.
“Don’t worry you could probably set off a bomb next to her right now and she
wouldn’t wake up.” Tina grinned widely at him. “So what now?”
“I leave and make an anonymous phone call about the lake house.” Reed picked
up his leather jacket and started walking out of the room. Stopping he turned
back and looked at Tina seriously, “Watch her and make sure nothing happens to
her please.”
Tina nodded in understanding.
