Pippen, Scottie

Pippen, Scottie (1965- ), American professional basketball player, considered one of the most skilled and versatile players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In the 1990s Pippen, who plays as a forward, consistently ranked among the NBA leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals.

Born in Hamburg, Arkansas, Pippen was slow to develop as a basketball player and did not win a starting position on a team until his senior year in high school. He enrolled at the University of Central Arkansas in 1983 and worked initially as manager of the basketball team. His play rapidly improved, however, and by his senior year he was a starting guard and the team’s best player.

The Seattle SuperSonics selected Pippen in the first round of the 1987 NBA draft and immediately traded him to the Chicago Bulls. Pippen earned a starting spot as a forward for the Bulls during his second year, the 1988-89 season. Pippen and acclaimed guard Michael Jordan helped lead the Bulls to six NBA championship titles (1991-1993, 1996-1998). In the 1995-96 season the Bulls also became the first NBA team to win 70 or more games in a season, finishing with 72 victories. Before the start of the lockout-shortened 1999 season, the Bulls traded Pippen to the Houston Rockets. Before the 1999-2000 season, the Rockets traded him to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Pippen’s honors during his career include being named a member of the United States national basketball team in 1992 and 1996. Both squads won the gold medal at the Olympic Games. Pippen also played in the NBA All-Star Game in 1990 and from 1992 to 1997. He was elected most valuable player (MVP) of the 1994 All-Star Game.
