Why Do Students Engage in Hazing Activites?

In a study done at Alfred University, they found the top reasons why people go along with the hazing practices. Most people said they went along with to fit in and feel accepted into the new organization (All About Hazing). Also, some students see hazing (such as paddling, as pictured on the lower right) as a rite of passage and earning their spot in the organization. In some schools members of the Greek organizations are able to become a member without pledging. These members are then known as paper.

When Walter Kimbrough of Alfred University went on college campuses to see how those people felt, he found that they hated the term. This could also be considered another form of hazing that lasts for the entirety of their membership in the group. Other top reasons were for the fun and excitement that comes from the hazing act, going along with it and being afraid to say no, revenge, and also feeling closer in the group. However, to me there are very few things that are worth taking off all my clothes for, running across campus screaming, in the middle of the day just for everyone to see me

Furthermore, an article from Social Behavior Personality states: An International Journal, found that most members of a sorority or fraternity do not mind some forms of hazing, where as people who are not involved in Greek life think that it is a stupid way of becoming a member. There was also an article in the USA Today that brought to light an organization that Greek members set up to monitor the binge drinking (pictured on the right) that their members do. By setting up this program, they can keep a closer eye on their members and make sure that no bad consequences come of their members drinking.
