September 9, 2002, Playa del Rey, California, around 10 o'clock at night. Two pledges from the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, of Cal Sate of L.A., were led to the beach for the last time. According to the legal documents, the older members of the sorority forced Kristin High (22) and Kenith Saafir (24) to perform various physical activities followed by blindfolding, tying their hands together and leading them into the water. An hour and a half later, when the police arrived, they found the two dead bodies of the girls. This is a somewhat extreme story from People magazine, but is an example of what some must endure in order to be considered one of the group. In Greek life just about everyone must go through some sort of initiation, however not all of it is bad, and I feel that it makes you that much more proud to wear the letters of your organization if you have had to earn them. The different forms of hazing, some problems that happen when a person is hazed, and ways that some organizations are getting around hazing their pledges, are the problems that will be discussed.
