My Thoughts and Experiences With Greek Life

A big part of me choosing Alpha Sigma Alpha , the sorority I am pledging this semester, is because they did not haze, and they have a very strict no hazing policy. I was still rather leery about joining because I was afraid that they would tell the girls that during recruitment, and then once you paid the dues, that the tables would turn.

I have heard some horrible stories about hazing around the country, and to me the only way that a person can get around that would be to actually go Greek and really see what it is like. I think that pledging was one of the best decisions of my life. To me, the reason that people have such negative feelings toward the Greek community is because they think it is all about hazing, parties, and alcohol. However, it is really a lot more than that. The reason the public feels this way is because that is all they hear about on the news. Very rarely do we hear a story about the philanthropic event that the Greek community is putting together, but one would not be able to go ten minutes without hearing about a kid who was killed while pledging.

Lastly, hazing is not done by every member or chapter of Greek life. There are, of course, the people who will do it, but more people do not. I think that the Greek communities on college campus and universities have the wrong reputation. Hazing is not the correct way of initiating a person into a club, and to me it never should be. Many chapters are implementing strict anti-hazing policies. Hopefully this opened your eyes to the way hazing takes place, the consequences that come from hazing, and also what is being done to stop hazing on campus.
