So Far from the Bamboo Grove

My Book Report On So Far from the Bamboo Grove

So Far from the Bamboo Grove is about a mother, a teenage girl, and a little girl escaping from Korea. Northern Korea. The mother and the teenage girl, Ko, and the little girl, Yoko, were escaping because of the war. The war was World War II. They were headed to Japan, where their relatives lived.

During their journey, they had to hide from soilders, make and find food, walk a long way, met new people, and lost a member.

This story starts by the mother, Ko, and Yoko leaving their house, that is located in Nanam, North Korea. The mother left a note for her husband and Ko left a note for her brother, Hideyo. Both of the notes said to meet the three girls in Aomori, which is located at the top of Japan's biggest island, Honshu.

The three girls were off to the southern tip of South Korea. They have to go to Pusan, and then take a ship to get to Japan. So that's what the three girls did. There were a lot of obstacles in their way. Solders were chasing them, they slept on the cold ground, and they had to make and find their own food. The ladies also took a train or a little bit of the way starting at Wonsan. Then stopped at Seoul, the capital of Korea. From Seoul to Pusan they walked.

Walking towards Pusan the girls did the same thing that they always did. Find or make food, slept on the hard ground, and hiding from soilders that chased them. Once they arrived in Pusan, they waited for a boat from Korea to Japan.

Once they arrived at Japan, they stayed at a city called Fukuoka. Fukuoka is located on the last island of Japan, Kyushu, and is on the northern tip of Kyushu.

Ko and Yoko's mother was lying down on a bench. She was ill! Ko was looking for food and Yoko was with her mother. Yoko's mother was suffering from a sickness. Yoko gave her mother some water. Just in a few minutes, Yoko and Ko's mother...died. Ko returned right after her mother's death. We were crying and crying.

A lady saw Ko and Yoko crying for there dead mother. She wanted to help them, so the lady let them stay in her house. Yoko and Ko's mother got cremated. Ko took the knife that belonged to her mother.

So the lady took them in. Ko and Yoko were planning to stay in the city for 6 months, but they knew that they couldn't stay at this ladies house forever. So they tried to find a place to live also.

Yoko and Ko now live in a warehouse. Ko and Yoko go to school. They can't afford any of the school supplies, so Yoko goes to the Furnace Room and gets the left over materials. It helps Yoko and Ko a lot. When it was Ko's birthday, Yoko bought her older sister expensive Green Tea. Ko got mad at Yoko, but she was pleased that her younger sister bought her tea. Yoko was supposed to save her money for shoes, but she thinks buying her sister tea is more important than shoes.

Yoko and Ko celebrate Ko's birthday. The next day, Ko and Yoko went to school, and Yoko got more school supplies for her sister and herself. Yoko made a essay and it went into the newspaper. She got the 1st prize, which is 10,000 yen.

Yoko and Ko were very happy! Their older brother, Hideyo, gets to Fukuoka and celebrates with them. All the siblings unite in Fukuoka. Then they all live together in the warehouse.
