As a few people have begun to realise I have taken a stance against quite a few of the values that many people hold dear one. Now, we are getting close to Christmas as a few people have realised that as with many things I am against the concept of Christmas. Now don’t get me wrong I love the presents, I love the food and I especially love the time off. My problem with it is that is starting to stray away from traditionalist values and is becoming too commercialised.
I say this because if you haven’t noticed, Christmas is no longer about giving and sharing but about multi-national companies getting rich, and flogging everything off to people. This is apparent in the fact that stores such as K-mart and Myers started selling Christmas decorations etc. extremely early this year. Whilst we were still a good 2 months from Christmas, stores were already getting into the so-called Christmas “cheer” trying to sell everything Christmas, whilst subjecting shoppers to those god-awful tunes that stores seem to love around Christmas time (aren’t they fucking annoying…)
Stores claim that the reason behind this was to allow shoppers to get in early for Christmas, but really do you think this is necessary?? Sure it allows people to be organised, but with many stores having sales in the few weeks after Christmas, and then the dreaded Christmas in July, it almost feels like the multi-nationals are trying to enforce a year long commercial Christmas on consumers.
Another problem with Christmas is Christmas lights. Now don’t get me wrong, Christmas lights can be awesome, I’ve seen some awesome displays in my time, but at times it is like neighbours (or even neighbourhoods) pitting war against each other, competing to see who can possibly have more lights per square inch on their properties. This in itself ruins a good thing, because it sees what have the potential to become brilliant Christmas displays and tasteful decorating , turning out to look like the flashing neon lights of a shady sex shop (well not the neon lights, but you know what I mean).
Lastly we have the problem of the traditional idea of Christmas being lost. The Christmas holiday was originally begun all those many years ago to celebrate the birth of Christ (no this won’t be a religious rant, because as many of you know, I anti mass formed religion). Over years of commercialisation and penny pinching capitalist ideals, this celebration has been lost. Children all around the world (well many of them anyway) look forward to Christmas day, knowing that they will have presents sitting under the tree waiting for them. But how many of them realise that this day is really to celebrate a mythical (well I believe him to mythical) religious figure?? Also how many of them realise that they are fortunate to be receiving those presents?? When all around the world there are children who miss out due to the fact they were born into poverty and/or warzones??
Anyway that is my rant on Christmas, it probably makes no sense, but then since when does anything I say or write make sense?? But just remember, the only reason we get presents on Christmas day is because commercialisation has turned a day to celebrate the birth of some poor guy who would later be nailed to a cross (giving us the Easter holidays), into a reason to spend money and make each other feel good by giving each of presents, that when given to us to act happy to receive, but are really thinking why the fuck did grandma buy me more socks and jocks that I will never wear??
Well see you all in hell,
ME
P.S. Religion is fucked, so don’t go believe that I wrote this to promote it…
