One Liner: A good anime - if you can stomach it.

Animation: The animation in Berserk is mediocre. The graphic nature of the anime (dilapitations galore, blood quirts, blood baths, nudity, and rape), is hard for most people to stomach (the sad thing is, lots of kids CAN stomach it these days). Animation in Berserk is not particularly fluid or colorful, but rather dark and crude. Perhaps it was intentionally done so to reflect the darkness and brutality of the setting, but regardless, Berserk is no animated wonder. Battle scenes are often a compliation of recycled shots, and the blood squirts get rather tedious after a while. If it wasn't for the characters' armors and drastic size difference, the persons in Berserk would be hard to distinguish from each other. Animation is very similar to that of Dragon Ball (which isn't good at all), which could be considered a con as to why one should watch the series.

Sound: Like the animation, the sound in Berserk is bland as well. With over half the soundtrack being the gushing of blood or men yelling, I didn't recollect any "tracks", save for the OP and the ED. Those by themselves are somewhat decent, but could have definitely been better (if you listen to it, you'll know what I mean). While not something you should try to avoid at all costs, the OST in Berserk should not really give you an urge to listen to the music for fun.

Story: The best part about Berserk is that it delivers a true plot that is consecutive throughout each episode. Unlike other anime, where there are "reliever" episodes that do not contribute anything to the central story line, viewers will find that such a thing does not exist in Berserk. Each episode is crucial to the impace of the anime, rich not only in plot development but character depth. As one might expect from the first few episodes of the series, the plot in Berserk is very dark and violent, sometimes portraying nudity and very mature themes (definitely not for the kiddies). Yet, it is in the darkness where Berserk truly shines, since the story hooks the viewer and keeps him satisfied until the very end with suprising twists and incidents. The only unsatisfying thing about Berserk is the rather disturbing ending of the anime, until you realize that a more satisfying conclusion to the series has already been given - in the first episode!

Character: Because of such a great story that underlines the anime, Berserk produces surprisingly memorable characters that the viewer can easily become attached to. Beneath the brute action and crude dialogue lies incredibly complex characters who try to decide whether to follow their ambitions or help the ambition of others'. Therefore, the characters in Berserk quickly develop their own individual personalities and contribute their fair share into the series. I believe it is because of the great character depth that the story in Berserk is so well written.

Value: Even though Berserk contains an powerful storyline and great characters that would make anybody overlook the rather crude animation and sound, the gruesomeness brutality and sickening bloodbaths wouldn't be that appealing so that a person would like to watch it more than once.

Enjoyment: The characters and story make this anime great - definitely enjoyable if one can stomach the blood, violence, and nudity. Though dark and depressing, if one is shooting for an anime with a good plot, Berserk is definitely the way to go.

Bottom Line: If solely based on the story and characters, Berserk is an awesome anime. However, the overall impact is lessened by the crude animation, sound, and graphic scenes. Definetly not something for younger audiences and not a family outting.
