Pope Urban II at Clermont Cathedral



This is a picture of Pope Urban the Second making his speech in the Clermont Cathedral. His speech called for all Christian knights to take back the Holy Land from the Turks; his speech started the first crusade. Although the painting shows him giving his speech inside the church, The Clermont Cathedral was not completed at the time of the speech of Pope Urban II. The Crowd that gathered was too large to be contained inside any church. Pope Urban II gave his speech outside the uncompleted church.



The Capture of Antioch



This picture shows the capture of Antioch in 1262. Marcus Bohemond had set up the siege of Antioch. The city spread across rough territory, fortified by four hundred towers and sprawled over twenty-five miles. Marcus Bohemond had decided that he wanted control of Antioch. He demanded rulership over Antioch. By the end of the evening of July 3, 1098, every Turk was killed. Many Christians were killed also. The fall of Antioch to the Muslims caused Louis IX to undertake the Eight Crusade.



Tripoli



In this picture, its shows the the city of Tripoli which fell to the Muslims in 1289. It was the last city of conquest, taking almost six years of siege before it was finally brought under the Crusades.



Coin From The Crusades



This is a coin minted in Aleppo under the great Muslim leader, Saladin. He was foe of Richard the Lionheart and the Crusaders. He also founded the Ayyubid Dynasty. Even his opponents admired him for his chivalry, justice and piety. This silver coin of Salidin was minted between 1174 and 1193AD. Saladin died in March of 1193.



Surrender Of Acre



This picture represents the surrender of Acre to Philip Augustus and Richard the Lion-Hearted during the third crusade. Richard the Lion-Hearted and Philip Augustus took their armies by sea and at the Holy Land they joined the Christians, attacking Acre. It was defeated in July of 1191.



A Crusader



This is what a typical Crusader in the 11th century might have looked like. The Crusaders were people who were determined and fought to win back the Holy Land. They were so determind to win back the Holy Land, that even when they failed to get it back, some children even became crusaders and started their own crusades, known as the Children's Crusades.
