One Night of Fun
She was studying quietly for her big exam, When the phone rang, she saw it was Pam. “Hello?” she said, quite annoyed by this time, Tonight hers was easily the busiest phone line. “Are you going to Marks party?” Pam asked in a hurry, “For the last time, NO, and I’m not going with Murray!” Pam sat quiet for a second or two, Then… “you’ve just gotta’ see my perfect new ‘do!” Kendra breathed deeply, and asked why the fuss, Then added quite quickly, “I’ve still gotta’ dust!” “You’re just making excuses, you’re really too nervous, You’ve never been drunk. Well neither has Jervis! Don’t worry ‘bout a thing, it’s all under control, We’ll have you back in time, and you’re parent’s wont know!” There was a minute of silence as Kendra thought it over, She agreed when Pam promised the driver’d be sober. “Great!” Pam squealed. “I’ll be there in a minute!” She hung up the phone, was she pushing the limit? When Pam arrived Kendra was ready to go, “I’ve just heard that Murray’s supposed to show!” Pam informed her of her crush’s agenda, And as a reply, got a red face from Kendra. The party was down in the old part of town, They had discovered, once the house had been found. They walked up the drive to the huge old house, There was lots of people, and two playing with a mouse! “I don’t like the looks of this creepy old place.” She said to herself as she scrunched up her face. ‘Hey Kendra! Over here!” she turned and saw Paul, “Glad you came, are you staying?” She felt her face fall. “What’s the matter?” he asked, concern in his voice, “Nothing,” she said, searching for a certain group of boys. “If you’re looking for Murray, he’s not here yet, He should be soon. Hey! There’s his ‘vet!” She turned around as Pam elbowed her side, She was sure she looked like trash, and just wanted to hide. He parked his car and turned her way, Noticed her there, and gave her a wave. “Hi Kendra!” he said in surprise, “Never thought you’d come,” he was twice her size. “Yeah I’m here,” she said casually, “If it wasn’t for Pam, I might never be.” They all went inside to join the party, And Pam took off with her boyfriend Marty. Kendra and Murray sat and talked for a while, And before she knew it, time had flown by. Murray had only just a few drinks, He offered to drive her and gave her a wink. “No thanks,” she said, “I’ll find my own ride,” “I’m not drunk,” he assured her with pride. But she could tell that he was half drunk, “No!” she replied as she cleaned up her junk. “I’m sorry I can’t and I won’t go with you, Get home in one piece, is what I want to do.” He got upset, and headed for the door, But stopped at the keg, to have just one more. She couldn’t believe how wrong she had been, In him she wasn’t sure, just what she had seen. Pam walked in and said they were leaving, Did she want a ride? She asked without teasing. “Yeah sure,” she replied almost too quickly, Looking at Murray just made her feel sickly. They hopped in the car and took off down the lane, Kendra was happy to be leaving without that pain! It all happened so fast but left a good scar, What they could see, looked like Murray’s fine car. Ahead in the road was a big bright light, That’s all she remembered ‘till she awoke with fright. Where she was, she wasn’t quite sure, All she could feel was the pain all over her. “Omigod! What on earth is going on!? Where am I? I want my Mom!” She tried to scream but it was just too hard, And she realized she was in a hospital ward. Kendra stared up into the many sad faces, As they told her what happened and of her friends fates. It was Murray’s car that they had hit, He had tried to pull over but didn’t quite make it. He had been drunk when he was driving, Not totally aware that danger was hiding. She started to cry as she began to pray, “I’m sorry,” she said “You had to take them away. I didn’t mean for anything bad, Just a little fun is what I wanted to have…” She never finished for it was too late, It was her time to go, no longer she’d wait. This is what happens when we drink and drive, So please stop now, before you ruin any lives!
