The Oath is traditionally sworn by a member of the Guild when they first join, or when they are promoted to the rank of Sergeant or Captain.In the past Oaths were sworn with the oathtaker's right hand upon the Avatar of Justice. Now that the Avatar is no longer present upon Erdreja, the Oath is often taken with one hand placed upon the Hammer of Justice, the Militia's Artifact weapon. It has even been known for members to swear oaths upon Oddjob's Axe. A member of Militia command is invariably present when the Oath is taken.
Once taken the Oath allows the Oathsworn Guild member to benefit from the powers of various Militia items. These are most commonly in the form of the Militia Sashes, which grant the Oathsworn wearer the ability to Halt a suspect in their tracks upon command or the Sergeant's Sashes, which additionally permit the wearer to walk through areas of Forbidding. Also the Hammer of Justice itself requires the Oath to be sworn to be able to weild the item.
