History:
The Watchung Public Library is located
in what was once the home of the Pratt family. Situated behind the Arts
Center on the busy Watchung Circle, the library is, for many residents,
the cultural and intellectual center of the community.
Services:
In a unique home style atmosphere
patrons receive professional as well as friendly service. In addition to
the study room, there is a magazine room, a meeting room, and the
"Bicentennial Room" which serves as the Borough museum. Patrons have a
large selection of materials in a variety of media from which to choose.
The bulk of the collection consists of fiction and non-fiction books for
adults, young adults, and children with a strong emphasis placed on best
sellers and other popular materials. The library also has an excellent
collection of children's picture books specializing in folk and fairy
tales. In addition to books, the library boasts one of the best
collections of videocassettes for children and adults for a library its
size. Patrons are also able to borrow compact discs, DVDs, adult and
children's audiocassettes, books on tape, and back issues from the 157
subscriptions which comprise the magazine collection.
As a branch library of the Somerset County Library System, the library is
able to provide services additional to those available at Watchung. The
computer system enables the library staff to satisfy most patron requests
on a daily basis via fax or the library system's delivery service. For
more unusual requests, the library can utilize the resources of the larger
state library network to reach out beyond the local library system.

The library offers an extensive schedule
of programs. For adults, there are book discussion groups and a monthly
speaker. For children, there are three story and/or craft programs each
week, plus one or two professional programs each month. During the summer,
there are programs every day as the children participate in the Summer
Reading Club.
