Bring Out The Leader In You

If you though a leader is born, you got to read this.

A leader is made, not born, as many believe. A true leader is not necessarily the one at the helm of things -- he is one whose positive points others would want to emulate. Each one of us can be a leader, just that we have to work towards it.

So, who is a true leader? A true leader is one who would be able to guide others, either by doing something himself or by directing a specific course of action. In today’s competitive world, enhancement of one’s standing in the workplace depends not on the number of years put in as in the good old days, but on performance, on actual results.

If you are capable of outstanding work, your stature in an organisation automatically goes up, and there would be many who would want to emulate you. This attribute makes you a leader in the true sense of the word.

“Can I aspire to be a leader?” you might ask yourself. Yes, definitely. Put in the right kind of effort in the right direction and a leader is what you shall be. No one needs a formal title to be a real leader, for leadership is something that needs to be developed on a personal level, if you want to succeed in life.

The modus operandi
Each one of us is a unique individual. Therefore our ways of achieving the same thing might be different. However, a few basic guidelines will go a long way in putting you on the right track.

Always look for the silver lining.  Follow this golden rule in any situation that you find negative.

Try and learn from an experience, focus on what went wrong and why; chances are, it won’t happen again.  Evaluate each and every action that you perform.

Set realistic and achievable goals and plan the path to be taken for achieving them. While doing so, focus on the task in hand and give it your best. While framing your goals be sure and clear about what you want to achieve, whether that is in accordance with your principles and values, and why you want to achieve it.

Know the value of discipline and truth, was Gandhiji’s advice to his followers. An advice that will stand all of us in good stead always.  And once your choice is made and you have acted as per the choice, accept responsibility for the consequence of your actions.

Always remember, never do something that goes against your conscience. We all have basic values of honesty and integrity. Remember not to lose these invaluable characteristics along the way.  Many a time, it is this that singles out the successful leader from the unsuccessful ones.

Once your goals are decided and plans made for achieving them, the next step would be develop the discipline to begin and take a task to its completion as well as you can.

A strong commitment towards achieving the goal will help you realise your goals and live your dreams.  Look inwards, know yourself as a person and give yourself whatever inputs needed to become a better person.

Where does one stop? You may ask, since desires and dreams are unlimited. Well, do remember the old saying: A Socrates discontented is better than a pig contented. Remember what Tagore said:  Where constant striving stretches its arms towards perfection”. It is the constant striving that is needed to make each of us a better person, someone who can contribute something worthwhile to humanity. Someone who can motivate others to better their performance, not only at work, but at other places as well. Only such a person a true leader.
